The St. Lawrence University volleyball team dropped a midweek road contest at the hands of Plattsburgh State Tuesday night, falling in straight sets 3-0.
The defeat brings the Saints' overall record to 4-19 on the season.
"It was a very disappointing result," said
Shelly Roiger, head coach of the Saints. "It's not just that we lost, it's how we lost. I thought we battled hard last Saturday versus Vassar, and we were unable to repeat that tonight."
The Cardinals got out to an early lead in the first set, but the Saints found their legs and tied the set up at six points apiece. Then, Plattsburgh State rattled off six straight points. While the Saints twice pulled within four points, Plattsburgh State scored four of the set's final five points to take the first, 25-17.
In the second set, St. Lawrence again would find themselves in a close match-up and took a 13-11 lead in the mid portion of the set. The Cardinals turned it into a 14-13 lead however, and after a 4-1 run over St. Lawrence, they'd hold onto a slim lead until the end of the set, winning 25-22.
Plattsburgh State then rolled to an 8-2 lead early in the third, which was enough to hold off the Saints and complete the sweep for the home side from Plattsburgh.
First-year setter
Vanessa Latam had 17 assists for the Scarlet and Brown, leading the way in that category, while
Vivian Zymeck was the highest scorer for the Saints at 10 kills.Â
The Saints now return home to finish their season with a string of weekend evening games, beginning Friday, Nov. 3 with a game at Burkman Gymnasium against SUNY Cortland. The Saints then finish their season Saturday, Nov. 4 against regional foe SUNY Potsdam.
