Cameron Buhl scored the first goal of the game, and
Felikss Gavars scored in the last minute of the game, but three unanswered goals from the Lakers in the second and third periods helped send the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 5-2 loss to Lake Superior State on Saturday night in Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence fell to 1-4-1 with the loss, while the Lakers improved to 3-3-0.
The Scarlet and Brown were all over Lake Superior in the first period with an 11-6 shot advantage, and would score the first goal of the game 11 minutes in. Senior captain
Justin Paul started the scoring play with a saucer pass to
Tyler Cristall, who carried the puck up the ice. Cristall sent a pass over that was initially deflected but fell onto the tape of Buhl, who buried the chance.
In the final minute of the first period, the Lakers would respond with a goal of their own. Jared Westcott would score off a passing play from Nate Scweitzer and Timo Bakos to tie the game at 1-1.
Early in the second period, the Saints were given a great chance to regain the lead when the Lakers' Sasha Teleguine was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct. The Saints would suffer a penalty less than a minute in to go to 4-on-4. St. Lawrence would go back on the power play after the minor penalty but was unable to capitalize.
Later in the period, Lake Superior would capitalize on their power play as the 17:45 mark when Connor Milburn's shot found the back of the net. Another penalty early in the third would also cost the Saints as Westcott was able to tally a power play goal to put the Lakers up 3-1.
Lake Superior State would successfully keep the Scarlet and Brown out of the net for a majority of the third and would take a 4-1 lead with an empty net goal.
The Saints would keep fighting and would get a goal back with an empty net and armed with a power play. On the 6-on-4,
Ty Naaykens skipped a pass up the boards to
Luc Salem, who held the line and found Gavars. From the top of the circle Gavars would rip a wrist shot through traffic and in to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Lakers would get another empty netter as time expired to go up 5-2.
St. Lawrence outshot Lake Superior 30-24 in the game. The Lakers were able to go 2-for-5 on the power play, while St. Lawrence was only able to score once on seven attempts.
