No. 10 Saints Offense Explodes in ECAC Opening Win Over No. 14 Princeton

Junior forward Abby Hustler's two goals and two assists and senior captain Julia Gosling's two goals and one assist led the 10th-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 7-2 win over the 14th-ranked Princeton Tigers on Friday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.

The Scarlet and Brown made an early statement in the anticipated top-15 matchup to open ECAC conference play. Hustler, parked on Princeton's blueline, redirected Anna Segedi's pass to a flying Kennedy Wilson. Wilson entered the Tigers' zone and sent a rocket over goaltender Uma Corneia's shoulder into the top-left corner. Just 27 seconds in, the Saints took a 1-0 lead.

Saints' goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström was sharp earlier to maintain the early lead. Princeton's captain Sarah Fillier came in on a partial breakaway but was denied by Nordström's glove.

After killing a Princeton power-play, SLU took advantage of their first power-play opportunity on a beautifully executed play. Katina Duscio carried the puck along the blueline and backhanded a pass to Segedi, who quickly fed Aly McLeod. McLeod completed the tic-tac-toe passing to Hustler at the near side hashmark. Hustler's one-timer beat Corneia to put St. Lawrence up 2-0.

Hustler stuck once again, not even three minutes later, on another Saints power-play. This time, she sent a rocket over Corneia's blocker. St. Lawrence's third goal was the end of Corneia's afternoon and she was replaced with sophomore Taylor Hyland.

After the first period, SLU outshot the Tigers 10-9.

Gosling continued the Saints' high-scoring pace early in the second period. Just above the goal-line in the right corner, Gosling sent a snipe over Hyland. Saints' broadcaster Greg Lapinski had the line of the night after Gosling's goal. He exclaimed, "Holy Toledo that was sick!"

Princeton responded moments later to cut the St. Lawrence lead back to three. Nordström made the initial save off Princeton's Katherine Khramstov's shot on a 2-on-1 rush, but Jane Kuehl corralled the rebound and cashed in on the open net.

The Tigers had a major opportunity to capitalize off the momentum from Kuehl's goal when they had over six minutes of power-play time, including a 5-on-3 opportunity, but Nordström and the Saints' penalty-kill held strong.

After the Tiger's extended power-play, the Saints had their chance on the player-advantage. Mae Batherson sent a shot from the blueline through a great screen from forward Gabi Jones and beat Hyland. The Saints third power-play goal gave them a four-goal advantage heading into the third.

Gosling continued her strong game, capitalizing on a 2-on-1 chance. She entered the zone and patiently outwaited the lone Princeton defender, which gave her a 1-on-1 with the Tiger goaltender, who she beat glove side.

Up 6-1, graduate-student goaltender Sirena Alvarez made her St. Lawrence debut, replacing Nordström. Emma-Sofie Nordström finished the afternoon with 27 saves.

Alvarez saw plenty of action in her seven minutes of play. After Sarah Marchand added a seventh Saints goal, Princeton headed to the power-play once again, with another 5-on-3 power-play. Alvarez made multiple strong saves before Fillier beat her to tally the game's final goal.

St. Lawrence finished 3-for-5 on the power-play, while Princeton went 1-for-5 on the player advantage.

"We had a great first shift to get things rolling for us," said head coach Chris Wells. "It certainly was a much closer game than the scoreboard indicates."

Princeton outshot the Saints 37-28 in shots-on-goal and 60-40 in total attempts.

In addition to Nordström's 27 saves, Alvarez finished with eight saves. For Princeton, Hyland had 14 saves and Corneia had seven in the loss.

"Emma was solid in net, we blocked some key shots and our PK was excellent," added Wells. Being able to execute and get a number of players involved has been a big help for our early season play and it was a big part of our win today."

The Scarlet and Brown moved to 7-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in ECAC play with the victory; Princeton fell to 3-2-0 and 1-1-0.
