Bahl Scores Game Winner, Nordström’s Career Day Leads No. 10 Saints in Upset Victory Over No. 5 Quinnipiac

Senior defenseman Kristina Bahl scored the game-winning-goal with 10:36 remaining in the third period, and sophomore goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström had a career-high 38 saves to lead the 10th-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team over the fifth-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.

Sarah Marchand gave the Saints an early lead in the first period. Marchand gathered a turnover from a Bobcat defender and entered the Quinnipiac zone. She fired a shot past goaltender Logan Angers, beating her under her glove.

Quinnipiac responded well to the early St. Lawrence goal. The Bobcats controlled possession and tested Nordström, who was strong throughout the first frame, totaling 13 saves in that period. The Bobcats were able to capitalize on their sustained pressure late in the first.

Maya Labad received a pass from Kahlen Lamarche on the low boards. She fired a hard pass towards Nordström, and Sadie Peart tipped the pass past the Saints' goaltender.

Quinnipiac outshot St. Lawrence 14-5 in the first period.

The second period saw a faster pace of play with a great goaltending. Angers made two great saves in the latter part of the middle frame. She utilized her six-foot frame and robbed two Saints backdoor on separate 2-on-1 chances. Nordström stood tall with 10 saves in the period.

The game was knotted 1-1 after two periods of play.

The Saints power-play continued its hot streak to break open the game. On the Saints second power-play of the game, Mae Batherson, on the blue-line, passed cross-ice to Bahl, who sent a blistering shot over Angers' blocker-side shoulder.

Five minutes later, the power-play struck again. This time, Bahl entered the zone with a sweet dangle that sent a Bobcat defender to the ice. Her pass to the front of the net was blocked but she gathered the puck and carried it around the back of the Bobcat goal. She then fed a cutting Anna Segedi, who beat Angers far-side.

St. Lawrence went 2-for-4 on the power-play in the game, while Quinnipiac was 0-for-2.

Quinnipiac pulled Angers with over four minutes to play in a comeback attempt, but Nordström and the Saints defense held strong. Marchand would add an empty-net goal to seal the deal on a big win.

"We were able to finish off a great weekend with a big win!" said head coach Chris Wells.

Quinnipiac outshot St. Lawrence 39-24 in shots-on-goal and 74-47 in attempts.

Nordström finished with a career-high 38 saves, while Angers had 20 in the loss.

"Emma was solid again today and our power play connected when needed to take some heat off and gives us the lead," added Wells. "Our league is so tough and these two wins give us off to a good start."

The Scarlet and Brown moved to 8-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in ECAC play with the win and weekend sweep; Quinnipiac fell to 8-2-0 and 2-2-0 with the loss.

The Saints will hit the road to the Capital District next weekend to continue conference play. They face RPI on Friday at 6:00pm and Union on Saturday at 3:00pm.
