Senior captain
Luc Salem and
Ty Naaykens were able to get their first goals of the season, but a Huskies's equalizing goal and a scoreless overtime sent the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 2-2 tie against Michigan Tech on Friday night in Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence moved to 1-3-1 in the young season, while the Huskies are still in search of their first win at 0-3-3.
Both teams started slow in the game, combining for just three shots over the first ten minutes of game time. The Saints and Huskies fought hard for puck control, battling on face-offs, and in the neutral zone.
Sophomore
Felikss Gavars attempted to start the scoring, weaving past a pair of Michigan Tech defensemen, and providing a quality wrist shot at Blake Pietila that was turned aside. The Scarlet and Brown were able to gain momentum later in the first period getting more quality chances to the goal. Â
While they would lead the first period in shots 9-5, the score would remain 0-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Michigan Tech came out aggressive in the second period, outshooting the Saints 8-1 over the first seven minutes. But it was
Ben Kraws, providing spectacular pad and glove saves to keep the score even. The Huskies would eventually break the scoreless contest with a goal from Lauri Raiman at the 8:28 mark of the second period.
However, St. Lawrence was granted a chance to tie the game, as Jed Pietila committed two penalties on one play, giving the Saints a four-minute power play.
The Scarlet and Brown would cash in as Salem collected a pass from
Cameron Buhl and rifled a snapshot through traffic and over the glove of Pietila to tie the game up at 1-1. Defensemen Mason Wiate was also credited an assist on the play. Â
Shots were knotted at 20 a piece after 40 minutes of play, and Michigan Tech outshot St. Lawrence 15-11 in the second.
Near the midway mark of the third, St. Lawrence would strike quick off an offensive zone draw to claim the lead. Tomáš Mazura took the faceoff and won it back to Naaykens on the wing. The junior would fire a shot through traffic and past the goaltender to make it a 2-1 game.
In a late attempt to comeback, Kyle Kukkonen of Michigan Tech drew a penalty shot with less than two minutes remaining in the contest. Kraws came up huge for the Saints, blocking Kukkonen's wrist shot with his left pad.
The Huskies however would find the goal they were looking for as Marcus Pedersen was able to scoop up the puck in heavy traffic and score with 8.9 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
The three-on-three overtime was both thrilling and nerve-wracking for both sides, as
Justin Paul and Salem each took shots that almost went past Pietila. Neither netminder gave an inch during the 5-minutes of extended action, as the game went to a 2-2 draw. Â
In the shootout, Mazura scored on a backhander in the second round, but it was Kraws who stole the show stopping all three chances he faced. The game would ultimately result in a 2-2 tie.
Kraws would stop 33 shots in the goaltender duel, while Pietila made 32 saves for the Huskies.
St. Lawrence hosts long-time rival Lake Superior State tomorrow night at Appleton Arena in a 7:00 p.m. game. Â
