Skidmore Hands Saints Straight Set Defeat at North Country Challenge

Despite holding a lead late in the third set, the St. Lawrence University women's volleyball team gave up the late lead, ultimately falling 3-0 in their final game of the North Country Challenge on Saturday, October 23.

The Saints' starting lineup played strong with first-year Araiza Acum-Santos led the team with a total of 11 kills. Senior Vivian Zymeck closely followed with 10 kills. First Year Vanessa Latam helped the Saints with 22 assists and 11 digs. On the Thoroughbred side, Maya Stolarz and Madison Manning both had eight kills.

After losing the first set 18-25, the Saints took a moment to regroup before starting the second set. They narrowed the margin, however it still wasn't enough and they ended the second set 19-25.

Coming into the third set, the Saints brought some fire into their game and tied the score at 20-20, and however, Skidmore overpowered them in final point totals, ending the third set at 26-24.

"I'm disappointed that we didn't come and defend our home court." Shelly Roiger, head coach of the Saints said. "I think we showed a good fight but it was just too late in the match."

With over half of the team being underclassmen, the Saints are still finding their rhythm. Some shining moments of teamwork from some less experienced Saints' players, such as Araiza Acum-Santos, Vanessa Latam, and Lily Snide showed the potential of the Saints down the road.

The Saints will have another chance to defend their home court in their next match against Vassar on October 28th at 11 a.m. in the Burkman Gymnasium.
