Game Recap: Volleyball |

Saints Fall in Four to Bard

Julia Giroux had 20 kills and 21 digs, but the St. Lawrence volleyball team lost to Bard 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in Annandale on Hudson, N.Y.

The Saints took the first set 25-12. They jumped out to a 5-0 lead, which included a pair of kills from Giroux, and two aces from Lily Snide. The Raptors were never able to cobble together a comeback. They had one five-point run, but other than that they only scored two consecutive points once.

In the second set, the Saints scored five straight to lead 19-18, but Bard scored seven of the final eight points to win 25-20 and even the match. The Saints allowed another late run in the third set, this time eight straight, and found themselves on the wrong side of a 23-15 match. St. Lawrence scored three straight, including back-to-back kills from Giroux, but Bard won 25-19 and lead the match 2-1.

The fourth set was filled with runs, with each team snagging the lead but the other responding accordingly.  Midway through Bard scored six straight to lead 18-13, but the Saints then scored four straight to bring the game to within one. Bard then led 22-19, but again the Scarlet and Brown scored three straight to draw the game level. Bard scored the final three points, a service ace sandwiched by kills, to win the final set 25-22, and the match 3-1.

In addition to Giroux's 20 kills, Lainey Roman had 11 and had a game high five aces. Lily Snide continued her role as the main setter and finished with 33 assists. Adeline Riesenberger had a team best three blocks.

Head coach Shelly Roiger
"After doing what we are supposed to do in set one, we allowed our opponent to go on runs late in sets multiple times and it cost us the match. Hats off to Bard who cranked up their aggressiveness and defensive intensity and simply outplayed us the rest of the match. Making history for all the wrong reasons is a tough learning point and this one will sting for a long time. However, like all things in life, it's not what happens to you that matters, it's how you respond, and if this is the worst thing happening in our lives right now, then we are pretty fortunate."
