The St. Lawrence volleyball team defeated the Bears of Potsdam 3-0 in Burkman Gymnasium on Tuesday night, which included a 62-point second set.
The Saints led 13-9 in the first set, and went on a seven-point run to extend their lead. That stretch included three service aces by first-year
Julia Giroux and a pair of kills from
Lainey Roman. The Saints failed to convert on just four side-outs in the set, and won 25-14.
In the second set, St. Lawrence had the first two set-points at 24-23 and 25-24. Potsdam earned two straight to earn their first set point at 26-25. The teams traded points on the next nine rallies as the Saints successfully held off five set points.
Katrina Henrich served for the final two points, and the Scarlet and Brown defense was solid and eventually forced errors from the Bears to take the two-set lead with a 32-30 win.
The Saints used that momentum early in the third set and went ahead 7-3, but Potsdam looked to extend the match and went on a few mini runs to lead 10-8. St. Lawrence responded with five of their own to re-take the lead. The Bears tied the set at 15 apiece but had consecutive errors to give the Saints the lead again, a lead that stood for the rest of the match. A kill from first-year
Berit Brecke gave St. Lawrence match point, and a service error from Potsdam gave Saints the straight set win, with a 25-22 final set.
Giroux finished with 19 kills, her third straight match with at least that many, four service aces, and 13 digs. Lainey finished with 13 kills.
Lily Snide had a season high 37 assists and 15 digs.
Jessica Ader led Potsdam on both sides of the ball, finishing with nine kills and 18 digs.
Head coach Shelly Roiger
"After a tough loss over the weekend, I am very happy with how the team bounced back. We had a sloppy second set with our service game, but other than that I thought we did a lot of very good things tonight. We had a lot of hitters finish the match with high efficiency, so it was good to see multiple players making contributions. This was definitely our most complete match in terms of everyone doing their job and it was nice to get that first home win of the season. We will use tomorrow as a day of preparation as we get ready for Thursday's match against Clarkson."
