Box Score The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team opened the 2022-23 season with an exhibition contest at Colgate on Sunday afternoon, where the Saints fell to the Raiders 3-0.
Julia Gosling, who returned to the Saints this season after being centralized with Team Canada, led the Scarlet and Brown with nine shots including four on goal, while
Kennedy Wilson,
Rachel Teslak,
Shailynn Snow,
Morgan Giannone and
Abby Hustler all recorded three shots on goal.
After a scoreless first period of play, Saints' goaltender
Lucy Morgan finished with five saves, while Colgate's Kayle Osborne made seven.
The Saints held a 16-13 shot advantage after the first 20 minutes.
The Saints and the Raiders skated through another scoreless 18 minutes, before the Raiders broke the tie. Kaitlyn O'Donohoe was the first to the score sheet giving Colgate a 1-0 lead on the power play at 18:21 off the pass from Danielle Serdachny.
Just about a minute later, Sydney Bard gave the Raiders a 2-0 advantage, with Serdachny and O'Donohoe earning assists on the play.
Kristýna Kaltounková was able to add one more for the Raiders with an empty-net goal, just before time expired. Elyssa Biederman assisted on the play at 19:56 for the 3-0 final.
"We had great game speed today vs. one of the top teams in the country," said head coach
Chris Wells. "To be able to play at that pace this time of year is worth about a week's worth of practice. We had some great chances to put one in and played right to the end with our goalie out."
Morgan made 14 stops for the Saints and shared time with
Caitlin Whitehead, who finished with eight saves, while Osborne finished with 13 saves and Hannah Murphy made 15.
The Saints finished with a 58-48 edge in shots, including a 28-25 edge in shots on goal. The Raiders went 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Saints finished 0-for-3.
St. Lawrence will open its regular season on the road with a pair of games at Providence College. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, September 23 and 2 p.m. on the 24th.
Please note that stats will not count for today's exhibition game.
