Jordan, Hennessey Net Hat Tricks; No. 11 Saints Down Potsdam in Season Opener

Chris Jordan and Jack Hennessey each recorded a hat trick and eight other members of the 11th-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team scored to defeat SUNY Potsdam 16-5 in their season opener on Wednesday afternoon in Potsdam, N.Y.

With the win, the Saints moved to 1-0 early in the season, while Potsdam fell to 1-1.

Chris Jordan opened scoring just about four minutes into the game for the Scarlet and Brown with his first of the game off the pass from Ben Hutchinson.

Jordan scored his second of the game and Judge Murphy, Zadoc White and Mark Mahoney all scored, as the Saints shutout the Bears, 5-0 after the first quarter of play.

In the second quarter, Bobby Wells scored his first collegiate goal off a quick pass from Mark Mahoney from behind the goal line. After a battle for control late in the second, Joe Scarfi scooped up the ground ball and ran in for the unassisted tally with 1:03 remaining.

St. Lawrence scored 12 straight goals, including seven in the second quarter and headed into halftime up 12-0 over the Bears.

Potsdam was first to score out of the break, with the Bears' first goal of the game from Alec Miller. The Saints were quick to respond, as Hennessey tallied his third of the game on the man-up advantage, and Ben Hutchinson tallied his first of the year.

SUNY Potsdam added three in a row, to close the gap to 10, but the Bears wouldn't come much closer.
Whit Knight and Chase Malatesta both recorded their first collegiate goals to close the game for the Scarlet and Brown.

"It was nice to get the first one under our belts," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "We had to thread the needle with Mother Nature today and appreciate Potsdam having a great field ready. I thought we had a nice businesslike approach and we were able able to take advantage of our success at the face off dot. Now we have a quick turnaround to a big challenge on the weekend."

William Helm started in goal for the Saints and recorded the win with nine saves, while Michael Marinello, Andrew Vona and Elliott LaGorce all saw time between the pipes for the Scarlet and Brown. Liam O'Neil made 16 saves in the loss for Potsdam.

St. Lawrence outshot the Bears 51-31 and held a 39-20 advantage in shots on goal.

The Saints also controlled the ground-ball game 51-25, dominated the faceoff dot winning 22 faceoffs to the Bears' three, while both teams finished 1-for-4 on the man-up advantage.

The Saints will travel to Rochester, N.Y. this Saturday to face seventh-ranked St. John Fisher at 2 p.m.
