Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 11 Saints Fall to Seventh-Ranked Cardinals on the Road

Ben Murtagh and Judge Murphy scored two goals each, but the seventh-ranked St. John Fisher squad outscored the No. 11 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team 7-1 in the first quarter, en route to a 14-4 win over the Saints on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.

Chris Jordan recorded an assist, while Xander de Roetth and Guthrie Little each caused two turnovers for the Scarlet and Brown. Padraic Condon led the Saints with seven ground balls and went 7-for-13 from the faceoff dot, while Brendan Brigham went 5-for-8.

It was the Saints that would score first, on an unassisted tally from Murtagh, but the Cardinals would score the next seven to take an early lead over St. Lawrence.

Ian Evan's added one more to start the second quarter and put St. John Fisher up 8-1, before Murphy added his first goal of the game, also unassisted, at 5:55.

Jordan assisted Murphy, for his second goal of the game, with one second to play in the second period and the Cardinals headed into the break with a 10-3 lead.

"It is the type of game you want to play this time of year to see where you are," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "We dug a hole early that we could never climb out of against a very good team. We will get back to work and get ready for Wednesday."

The Cardinals added the next four, and Murtagh closed the game with his second goal, but the Saints were unable to make a comeback before time expired.

Brennan O'Brien led the Cardinals with three goals and an assists, while Jordan Depetres tallied two goals and two assists.

The Cardinals held a 26-22 edge in shots on goal, while the Saints led 31-27 in ground balls and a 13-9 advantage at the faceoff dot. The Saints went 0-for-2 on the man-up, while the Cardinals finished 0-for-4.

St. Lawrence moved to 1-1 on the season, while the Cardinals improved to 3-0.

The Saints will take on SUNY Geneseo in their home opener at North Country Field on Wednesday, March 9 at 4 p.m.
