Twelve out of 19 skaters put up points and
Lucy Morgan made 26 saves, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team closed the weekend with nine ECAC points and completed the weekend sweep of No. 7/8 Quinnipiac with a 5-1 win at Appleton Arena on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Saints improved to 14-10-5 overall and 10-5-2 in conference play and also moved into fourth place in the ECAC standings. Quinnipiac moved 19-7-3 and 11-6-0.
Aly McLeod opened scoring and played the puck to
Abby Hustler, who slipped the puck up the boards to
Melissa Jefferies. Jefferies skated into the right circle and fired a wrister past Bobcat's goaltender Logan Anglers for her first goal of the season at 9:07 of the first period. Â
Just about a minute later, the Bobcats responded, as Kendall Cooper sent a pass to Olivia Mobley in the slot. Mobley beat Morgan on the blocker side to tie the game 1-1.
It was
Suyeon Eom, who tallied her second goal of the weekend and the eventual game winner, scoring next.
Rachel Bjorgan set up Eom, who flew through the neutral zone into Bobcat territory and sent a high shot past Anglers for the 2-1 lead.
Kristina Bahl also tallied an assist on the play.
After two solid shots from Hustler and Podvey, Angers let up another rebound, and following a scramble in front of the net, Hustler slipped the puck behind the Bobcats' goaltender for a 3-1 win and her ninth goal of the season at 17:25, giving the Scarlet and Brown a two-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
After one period of play, the Bobcats led 9-7 in shots on goal.
Morgan made a diving save with 16:38 to play in the second to keep Quinnipiac from coming back within one.
With just 2:25 to play in the second,
Laura Cote tallied the lone goal of the second frame.
Kristen Guerriero played the puck to
Brittney Gout, who skated in from the left circle. Gout found Cote on the doorstep. Her original shot was saved, but Cote was able to capitalize on another rebound for the 4-1 lead.
Guerriero recorded her second point of the day and added a goal of her own, sealing the final 5-1 win for St. Lawrence.
"That was a great way to end the weekend," said head coach
Chris Wells '92. "We showed up and scored some nice goals in the first period and that gave our team a lot of confidence. Quinnipiac gave a big push in the second and we got a few fortunate bounces in our own and the puck stayed out. We have been much better in the third since the break and we finished the game strong."
Morgan finished with 26 saves, while Angers finished with 16 saves and was relieved Corinne Schroeder, who stopped two shots.
Both teams finished 0-for-3 on the power play and the Bobcat's finished with a 27-23 edge in shots on goal.
The Saints hit the road next weekend and head to Brown and Yale on February 11 and 12. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
