Abby Hustler scored with 33.3 seconds to play, sending the game to overtime, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with Brown in ECAC action on Friday evening in Providence, R.I.
With the tie, St. Lawrence moved to 14-10-6 on the season and 10-5-3 in conference play, while Brown moved to 5-17-4 and 5-11-3.
After a scoreless first period of play, the Scarlet and Brown held a 13-7 edge in shots including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
With 3:52 to play in the second period, Maya Mangiafico pulled the puck off the near boards, skated through the left hand circle and slipped the puck to Anna Hurd. Hurd beat Saints' goaltender
Lucy Morgan with a low shot to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
The Bears would hold their one-goal advantage until late in the third and with 1:06 remaining in the third, Brown called its one minute time out and with 40 seconds to play, head coach
Chris Wells pulled Morgan for the extra attacker.
It was Hustler, who would tie it up for the Saints with her 10th of the season, with 33.3 seconds to play and send the game to overtime. Hustler carried the puck around the right circle, and beat Bears' goaltender Kaley Doyle on the glove side for the 1-1 tie. Â
Both teams produced a solid opportunity in overtime, but would skate to a 1-1 tie.
"We were able to do something we haven't done in a long time and that was come back in the third period and score an extra attacker goal," said Wells. "That will be a big boost for us moving forward into the last four games and playoffs. Brown played a solid game and blocked a lot of shots. They are much improved team and they worked as hard as anyone we have played. We wanted the three points, we will take our 1.5 and move on! We had a lot of good efforts tonight and the energy on the bench was great!"
Morgan finished with 26 saves, while Doyle made 27.
St. Lawrence finished with a 28-27 edge in shots and went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Brown went 0-for-2.
The Saints will travel to Yale to take on the seventh-ranked Bulldogs tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
