Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 7 Bulldogs Top Saints, 3-1

Shailynn Snow scored to tie the game, but the seventh-ranked Yale Bulldogs scored late in the second and added an empty-net goal to secure a 3-1 victory over the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon in New Haven, Conn.

With the loss, the Saints moved to 14-11-6 on the season and 10-6-3 in ECAC play, while Yale improved to 21-5-1 and 15-4-1.

It was the Bulldogs that would strike first, as Charlotte Welch dished the puck out from behind the goal line through traffic and found Claire Dalton for the 1-0 lead at 13:48 of the first period.

Yale successfully killed off a two-man advantage early in the second frame and Maloney made the stops to keep the Bulldogs up 1-0, but the Saints would capitalize on the 5-4 advantage that followed.

Jessica Poirier turned the puck over, found Snow in the slot and Snow was able to lift the backhand over the shoulder of Gianna Meloni for the equalizer at 4:05 in the second. Skylar Podvey also assisted on the play.

Brittney Gout nearly made it 2-1, as she stole the puck in the neutral zone and rang the crossbar just about two minutes later.

Welch added her second point to the scoresheet, as she carried the puck into the Saints' zone over the blue line and found Rebecca Vanstone on the doorstep. Vanstone beat Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan glove side for the 2-1 lead at 14:40.

Much like last night at Brown, Morgan headed to the bench with 1:20 remaining for the extra attacker. Kristen Guerriero nearly found Nara Elia for the redirect, but the Bulldogs turned the puck over and Greta Skarzynski lofted the puck down the ice for the empty net goal and the 3-1 final.

"That's what playoff hockey looks like and it felt good," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "Our team played with great effort against the top team in the league. It certainly has us well prepared for our next game vs. Harvard."

"Yale plays with poise and can come after you in waves," Wells added. "We did a good job staying in the game and creating chances. The third was our best and we were inches away from tying it up. Not fun to lose, but a fun game to be in."

Morgan finished with 30 saves, while Meloni made 21 saves for the Bulldogs.

Yale finished with a 33-22 lead in shots. St. Lawrence finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Bulldogs went 0-for-1.

The Saints will face a quick turnaround as they head to Harvard to make up their postponed game from earlier in the season on Monday. The puck is scheduled to drop at 3 p.m. on Valentine's Day.
