The Saints swept the top-three matches, but their late comeback fell short in the No. 1 seeded St. Lawrence University men's squash team's 5-4 loss against No. 5 seeded Tufts in the Semifinal matchup of the Summers Cup at the CSA Nationals at Penn University.
"The team and us coaches are obviously disappointed today after coming so close to making the final and losing in such a tight match down to the last game," said head coach
Scott Denne "I think it was a good learning experience for this young team and we can certainly learn from it and hopefully bounce back tomorrow for the 3/4 playoff against Amherst."
After the first six matches, the Scarlet and Brown were only able to get two wins, putting them in a 4-2 hole.
Lewis Anderson continued his perfect season in the number one spot sweeping Harry Charlton 11-7, 11-9, 11-5.
Nathan Mead also provided a sweep in the number two spot winning 1-5, 11-4, 11-3 over Kunal Valia.
The Saints brought the match to 4-4 with wins in the number three and seven spots.
Alejandro Moncada went up two sets to none with 14-12, and 13-11 wins, but dropped the third set 11-7. Moncada won the fourth set 11-8 to clean up the match. Captain
James Barrow traded sets with Oliver Eielson en route to a fifth set. The captain came through with an 11-7 win to tie the match.
The contest came down to the final match in the number five spot between
Vladimir Iglesias and Vivaan Jaikishan. Iglesias was able to win the first point 12-10, but his opponent would win the next three to take the win for himself and the team.
St. Lawrence will remain in Philadelphia for a third-place matchup with No. 3 seeded Amherst, who was also upset 5-4 in the Semifinal round by No. 7 Naval Academy.
