Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Skating Saints Close Legends Of Appleton Weekend With 4-2 Win Over Union

On a night where St. Lawrence University and the Hockey Alumni Association inducted Joe Marsh into the Legends of Appleton, St. Lawrence University men's hockey team got goals from four different scorers as they defeated Union College 4-2 on Saturday night at Appleton Arena in front of 1886 fans, alumni, and friends of the St. Lawrence hockey program.

The home series sweep is the second in a row for the Skating Saints, who swept Colorado College at Appleton Arena on October 14-15.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 5-4-0 with the win and 2-0-0 in ECAC play, while the Dutchmen fell to 4-7-1, and 2-2-0 in league play.

"This weekend was huge, for Joe specifically. It's his weekend and he's deserving of the best, he's a pretty special man that's done alot, not just for our program but for our institution, the north country, and here in Canton, he's an awesome person," said Charles W. Appleton II Head Coach Brent Brekke "From an alumni standpoint, the support from everybody coming back for this special weekend, and to have success means alot to everybody. I thought we weren't great start to finish on both nights, last night we weren't very good in the first period then we cranked it up in the second and played a little more to our identity with a real good push. Tonight, we weren't on our game. Union is good and Josh (Hauge) has done a great job with that program in a short amount of time. They played hard and they were quicker than us in a lot of areas, but we were fortunate to execute when we did. For us to find a way to win with a "B" game was important tonight."

In a first period littered with penalties, the Saints had four opportunities on the man advantage but came up empty as none of their four shots on goal found the back of the net.

Instead, it was Union, who had just one power play in the period, who scored just six seconds into their man advantage. John Prokop won an offensive zone faceoff to Chaz Smedsrud, who got a point-blank shot on Emil Zetterquist, which the goaltender saved. Carter Korpi came crashing into the crease and the puck deflected off his skate and in giving his team the 1-0 lead.

At the intermission, St. Lawrence and the Hockey Alumni Association welcomed former Charles W. Appleton II Head Men's Hockey Coach Joe Marsh onto the William "Bill" Torrey '57 rink at Appleton Arena to honor Joe, who joined the Legends of Appleton prior to puck drop in the Legends Room. Coach Marsh joins three prior classes of Legends, including inaugural inductees Brian McFarlane '55 and the late Bill Torrey '57, former men's coach Mike McShane, former women's coach Paul Flanagan '80, Peter McGeough '88 and Gina Kingsbury '04.

Much like last night, St. Lawrence came out firing in the second period after the festivities and finally tied the game up on the power play at the 10:13 mark of the period. Sophomore Greg Lapointe, who was patrolling the right side of the man-advantage, fired a shot that was saved by Connor Murphy. The rebound came out to Salem, whose shot was blocked to Max Dorrington, who was able to bury the loose puck for the 1-1 score.

With less than two minutes to go in the period, Felikks Gavars found fellow first year Tyler Cristall with an outlet pass up the left side of the ice. The rookie stepped into the zone, glided to the top of the circled and wired a wrist shot under the arm of Murphy to give the Saints the 2-1 lead.

Through 40 minutes, the Dutchmen were only able to get seven shots to the Saints' goal.

The lead was doubled at the 7:22 mark of the third as Zetterquist made a save on the defensive end that was scooped up my senior captain Jordan Steinmetz. He found fellow classmate Ashton Fry, who carried the puck down the left side of Murphy and sniped a wrister home giving St. Lawrence the 3-1 lead.

With less than seven minutes to go in the third, North Country native Will Arquiett tripled the Scarlet and Brown lead. TomᚠMazura started the play with a pass up the sideboards to Anthony Mollica, who put a shot on frame. The rebound came out to Arquiett, who drove the puck to the back of the net to take the three-goal lead. The assist from Mollica is the first point of his career in Scarlet and Brown.

In an odd series of events, the clock struck zero inside Appleton, but instead of the celebration, the officials went to the replay booth. Cullen Ferguson, who seemingly took an off target shot with nine seconds to go, was revealed to have gone past Zetterquist and through the netting. The review granted the Dutchmen a goal, but it was too little too late.

Zetterquist saved 17 shots to go along with his third career assist from the blue paint. Murphy stopped 19 shots for the Dutchmen in the losing effort. St. Lawrence outshot Union 23-19 in the 4-2 win.

Both teams were able to capitalize once on the power play with the Saints going 1-for-7 and Union going 1-for-2.

The Scarlet and Brown will stick around Canton and prepare to welcome Cornell University and Colgate University to the friendly confines of Appleton Arena next weekend on Nov. 11-12.
