Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Mazura Scores His First As A Skating Saint; Men's Hockey Falls 5-1

Tomáš Mazura scored his first goal as a Skating Saint but it was not enough as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 5-1 to Cornell University on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

St. Lawrence saw their record even up at 5-5-0 and went to 2-1-0 in ECAC play with the loss. The Big Red improved to 2-3-0 and 2-1-0 in league play.

Early penalties from the Saints eventually came back to bite them as Cornell would eventually break the 0-0 tie with a goal midway through the first period. Less than a minute into the man advantage, Ben Berard snuck a pass down to Gabriel Seger, who skipped a cross crease pass to Max Andreev. The forward directed the puck past Emil Zetterquist to put the Big Red up 1-0.

With under three minutes to go, the Skating Saints would jump on an Ian Shane mistake to tie the game. The Cornell goaltender played a puck outside his net and dropped it off in hopes for a defensive pick up. Instead, with the defenders veering away, it was Reilly Moran, who jumped on the loose puck and centered the puck to Mazura in the slot. The sophomore did the rest burying it past a sprawling Shane to tie the game.

Just 37 seconds later, Cornell regained their lead. Ondrej Psenicka found Sam Malinksi at the blueline, who fired a shot that was blocked in front of the net. The puck bounced free to Nick DeSantis, who put it over Zetterquist's pad take the 2-1 lead.

In the second period, the lead was extended to two when Kyler Kovich put a shot in on a sprawling Zetterquist, who was seemingly knocked out of his position in the crease. The replay brought no penalty as the game went to 3-1.

The Big Red continued their success on the power play as Berard and Seger found Andreev for his second man advantage goal of the contest to make it 4-1 going into the third.
Cornell would tag a late shorthanded empty-net goal on the board to close the game.

Zetterquist stopped 19 shots in the St. Lawence net, while Shane made 21 saves for Cornell.

The Big Red narrowly led in shots 24-22 in the game.

The special teams game came up big for Cornell as they went 2-for-5 on the power play to go along with the empty-net shorthanded goal. St. Lawrence went 0-for-4 on the man advantage with seven shots.

The Scarlet and Brown will be looking to bounce back tomorrow as they invite Colgate into Appleton Arena for another ECAC matchup.
