Senior captain
Jordan Steinmetz was able to get a goal late in the contest, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team was unable to mount a comeback as they fell 4-1 to Colgate on Saturday night in Appleton Arena.
The Saints fell to 5-6-0 with the loss and 2-2-0 in the ECAC, while the Raiders improved to 4-7-1, and 2-2-0 in conference play.
In a hotly contested first period that saw both teams generate more than 13 shots on goal, Colgate was the only team able to capitalize. Ethan Manderville carried a puck into the zone and fired a shot wide that was picked up at the blueline by Brandon Pierson. Pierson put a shot on goal that was save by
Emil Zetterquist but the rebound came to Manderville, who put the puck home for a 1-0 lead.
Momentum swung in favor of the Raiders, who outshot St. Lawrence 17-5 in the second period. In the barrage they were able to get two goals as Ryan McGuire wired a shot into the net at 7:57 before Matt Verboon extended the lead to 3-0 with a goal assisted by Alex Young and Nic Belpedio.
The Scarlet and Brown came out of the locker room in the third with new energy as they were able to land 18 shots on the big frame of Carter Gylander, many of which were dangerous looks.
The Saints finally broke through with just under six minutes to go off a goal from one of their captains. Defenseman
Philippe Chapleau calmly gathered a puck in the neutral zone that he skipped ahead to
Will Arquiett, who dumped the puck into the zone. Charging in was Chapleau's partner
Mason Waite, who was first to the puck and gained possession. The sophomore centered a pass to Steinmetz, who squeaked the puck past Gylander to give St. Lawrence a sliver of hope.
St. Lawrence kept landing shots on goal, but their attempted comeback fell short as with an empty net A. Young was able to pick up a puck along the boards from Ben Raymond and seal the game.
Zetterquist finished the game with 33 saves including double-digit totals (12-15) in the first two periods, while Gylander stopped 36 of the 37 he faced.
After the Saints dumped 17 shots onto frame in the third, the shot totals came away even at 37 apiece.
St. Lawrence had ten shots on the man advantage but went 0-for-3 on the power play including a 5-on-3 chance, while Colgate went 0-for-2.
The Skating Saints will take a two-week break from ECAC play as they travel to Niagara and Providence in the next two weekends. Next Saturday, the Scarlet and Brown will travel to Niagara Falls to take on the Niagara in a one-game trip. The game will start at 7:00 p.m.
