Saints Sweep Roos, Fall to Cardinals

Julia Giroux had 32 kills and Mattie Porter had 62 assists on the day as the Saints swept SUNY Canton but lost in four to Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon hosted by SUNY Canton.

St. Lawrence 1, Plattsburgh 3 (25-19, 24-26, 21-25, 18-25)
The Saints lost in four sets to the Cardinals in their opening match of the day. They took set one 25-19. In the second set, the Saints earned four straight points to draw even at 24, but a ball handling error and a service ace gave the game to Plattsburgh 26-24.

A nine-point run gave the Cardinals an early lead in the third set, but the Saints responded with five straight to close the gap to 11-10. The set remained close, and the Saints earned a 20-16 advantage, but seven straight Cardinal points put them ahead 23-20. The Saints broke up the run, but Plattsburgh responded with the final two points to win 25-21 and take a 2-1 set advantage.

The fourth set again was tight until the Cardinals scored nine out of 10 points to lead 23-14. The Saints were not able to come back from such a steep deficit and lost the final set 25-18.

Julia Giroux had 17 kills to lead the Saints, and Vivian Zymeck had a baker's dozen. Zymeck, Henrich, and Layman each had two service aces in the match, and Mattie Porter had 28 assists.

St. Lawrence 3, Canton 0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-22)
The second match of the day was also close, despite the sweep. The Saints won the sets by an average of 3 points.

After taking the opening two 25-21 and 26-24, the Roos led 22-20 and looked to extend the match to a fourth set. A Canton error gave the Saints the serve, and Giroux served three aces in the next four points to secure the sweep 25-22.

Lainey Roman had 17 kills to lead the Saints. That is the seventh match this season she has had 10 or more kills. Giroux had 15 kills, four aces, and 14 digs in a well rounded effort. Porter again had setting duties and had 34 assists.

Head coach Shelly Roiger
"Our whole team was very disappointed with our loss to Plattsburgh.  We had a solid first set and then in the same manner that we've done several times this season, we let off the gas and lost our sense of urgency.   As the match progressed and Plattsburgh stepped up their game, we failed to compete and respond.  We were undisciplined in many areas and we failed to step up to the challenge.  Our team has struggled all season long with maintaining focus from start to finish and then responding when teams make a push.  Plattsburgh definitely deserved the win.  They played with more energy and fire. All three sets with Canton were tight but we executed better at the end of each set in match two than we did earlier in the day.   I'm excited to see how good this team could be in a few seasons then they learn to play with consistent self-discipline."
