The St. Lawrence University volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Ithaca Bombers, who are undefeated in league play, on Friday night in Burkman Gymnasium.
The Saints trailed 6-9 in the first set when the Bombers went on a six-point run to open their lead to nine. After the teams exchanged a pair of points, the Scarlet and Brown scored three straight to try to close the gap, but Ithaca responded with three straight in kind to prevent any further run. They would hold on to win 25-17.
The Saints went on a five-point run midway through the second set to draw even at 12 and prevent the Bombers from running away with it. Ithaca responded with five straight of their own, and ended the match on a 13-4 run to win 25-16.
The third set was all Ithaca. They jumped out to a 5-0 lead, and had three more runs of at least four points. On defense, they defended all but one sideout, and took the final set 25-8.
Julia Giroux had 10 kills to lead the Saints, and
Vivian Zymeck had six. Giroux had a game high three blocks, and
Jada Masiclat and
Berit Brecke each had a pair.
Lily Snide had setting duty and had 18 assists.
Maggie Layman led the backrow in her libero jersey with eight digs.
The Bombers had a .506 hitting-percentage, the highest the Saints have faced this season, led by Leila Chipepo's 18 kills on 23 swings.
Head coach Shelly Roiger
"I am very proud of our competitiveness in the first two sets. We played intelligently, and I thought we made some very difficult plays on both sides of the ball that directly led to points. Our block was as good as it has been all season. Ithaca is an excellent team, one of the best we have seen this season, and I am proud of the fearlessness we showed, and how we never hit the panic button."
