Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cristall Scores First Career Goal; Skating Saints Sweep Weekend With 4-1 Win Over CC

Tyler Cristall scored his first career goal, and eight different Saints earned points as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team used a balanced attack to defeat Colorado College 4-1 at Appleton Arena on Saturday night to sweep the weekend series at Appleton Arena.

The Skating Saints improved to 3-2-0 on the season with the win, while Colorado College saw their record go to even at 2-2-0.

Along with the first career goal from Cristall, Will Arquiett and Jan Lasak both earned the first assists of their St. Lawrence career.

Game two of the weekend series started with a torrid pace compared to game one, as the two squads churned out 23 shots on goal between the two in the first. Early in the period, Buhl spun and fired a pass of a Tigers' defender which came right to Cristall, who one-timed the puck on goal. The hard-fired shot was turned away by Kaidan Mbereko to keep the game scoreless.

With 3:15 left in the first period, Ashton Fry was tagged with a five-minute major and a game misconduct, putting the Saints a man down. For the second time in as many games, the Skating Saints burned Colorado College with a shorthanded goal. Senior captain Aleksi Peltonen forced a turnover at the Tigers' blueline, which sprung him for a breakaway. The forward deked Mbereko and slid the puck five-hole and in to put St. Lawrence up 1-0.

The Tigers tied the contest at the 8:12 mark of the second period off a Saints' turnover. Stanley Cooley was pressuring the St. Lawrence defense, intercepted the puck, then slid a pass over to Ryan Beck, who scored to tie the contest.

Following a lengthy video review midway through the second, the Scarlet and Brown would reclaim their lead shortly after the restart. Mason Waite carried the puck into the Colorado College zone and looked to get the puck over to Luc Salem. The junior defender did the rest, as he weaved into the Tigers' zone and put a shot on goal that hit the crossbar. Salem stuck with the play and buried his own rebound to take the 2-1 lead.

With less than two minutes on the clock in the middle frame, Cristall intercepted a pass at the Colorado College blueline and turned it into a 2-on-1. The forward gave the puck off to Felikss Gavars, who got a shot onto the Tiger goal. The rebound popped out to Cristall, who's shot found its way past Mbereko to give the first-year his first goal in Scarlet and Brown.

At the 7:29 mark of the third period the game was put away for good, as two first career assists led to a 4-1 lead. Arquiett possessed the puck in the neutral zone and chipped a puck into Lasak on the forecheck. The first-year collected and zipped a pass into Cameron Buhl, who shoveled the puck home for the Saints' fourth marker.

The home sweep was the first for the Skating Saints since the 2018-19 season when the team swept Brown and Yale in January.

Emil Zetterquist was terrific in net turning away 25 of the 26 shots he faced, while Mbereko stopped 32 shots in the loss.

The Skating Saints will celebrate their sweep with a week off before heading to Houghton, Michigan on October 28-29 for a two-game set at Michigan Tech.
