The Saints had four power play chances in the first two periods, but were unable to capitalize as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 6-0 to Michigan Tech on Friday night at the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, Michigan.
St. Lawrence saw their record even up at 3-3-0, while the Huskies improved to 3-2-1.
The Skating Saints opened the game strong as they dominated possession throughout most of the opening frame. Part of the reason for this was St. Lawrence had two power play chances after a Michigan Tech elbowing penalty 1:56 in, and a hooking penalty six minutes later on a Tomáš Mazura breakaway.
Despite senior captain
Tim Makowski ringing a shot off the crossbar in the period, the Saints were unable to capitalize on their ten first period shots and eventually saw the Huskies take the lead. Ryland Mosley brought the puck into the St. Lawrence zone and had his initial shot blocked in the slot. The puck fell to the stick of Logan Pietila, who capitalized on the bouncing puck, firing a wrist shot past
Emil Zetterquist to give Michigan Tech the 1-0 lead after 20.
The Huskies came out of the locker room buzzing in the second getting two more goals in the opening five minutes. Tristan Ashbrook cashed in 1:32 into the frame as he used his skate to redirect a pass from Parker Saretsky to put his team up two. Then three minutes later, Jake Crespi found himself open in the slot and put a shot on goal that deflected off a Saint and in to make it a 3-0 game.
Michigan Tech, who entered the third period down 4-0 in power play opportunities, caught up with five man-advantages in the third and capitalized on three of those chances to put the game out of reach.
Zetterquist stopped 16 shots in 43:46 of action, while
Francis Boisvert played big in the Saints net with 15 saves in his 16:14 of work. Huskies' goaltender Blake Pietila had 18 saves in the win.
The Saints went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Michigan Tech went 3-for-5. The Huskies also held a 37-18 edge in shots on goal.
The two squads will line up once again at the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena tomorrow at 6:07 p.m. in the weekend finale.
