Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Zetterquist Stops 34 Shots; Skating Saints Fall 3-0 To Michigan Tech

The Saints had a 6-on-4 chance late in the third to tie up the contest but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team ended up giving up an empty-net goal as they fell 3-0 to Michigan Tech on Saturday night at the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, Michigan.

St. Lawrence fell to 3-4-0 on the year with the loss, while the Huskies improved to 4-2-1.

The first period saw Michigan Tech outshoot the Saints 14-5 but the Saints had some solid chances. First-year Jan Lasak had two great chances two minutes into the contest, but was stymied by Blake Pietila. Justin Paul, Felikss Gavars, and Ashton Fry also had looks but could not find twine. Emil Zetterquist stood tall in the net stopping all 14 Huskies shots that came his way.

The Scarlet and Brown kept plugging away getting seven shots in the opening 4:38 of the second period. Unfortunately, the Huskies counter-punched by opening the scoring 4:56 into the frame. Kyle Kukkonen was on a 2-on-1 with Ryland Mosley and toe dragged a defender before sliding a pass to his teammate. Mosley couldn't get everything on his shot as Zetterquist clipped the shot, but the puck trickled in to give Michigan Tech the lead.

The Skating Saints turned up the heat in the third as they looked for an equalizer. St. Lawrence had a beautiful look off the draw as first-year Tyler Cristall buzzed a shot high off Pietila 17 seconds into the third. The Scarlet and Brown proceeded to take 11 of the first 12 shots of the period, but Pietila and the tech defense was up to the task.

Late in the third, a penalty on Huskies forward Tristan Ashbrook gave the Saints a great opportunity to tie up the contest. During the man-advantage St. Lawrence pulled Zetterquist for an extra skater and had two 6-on-4 shots blocked before Max Dorrington was shutdown on his bid.

Moments after the power play ended Kukkonen was able to dump a puck into the empty Saints' net to give Michigan Tech the 2-0 lead. Jack Works would add a tally 23 seconds later to further put the game away at 3-0.

Zetterquist stopped 34 shots in the losing effort for the Saints, while Pietila made 18 saves for the Huskies.

Both teams came up empty on the power play as St. Lawrence went 0-for-3 and the Huskies went 0-for-4.

Michigan Tech held a 37-18 advantage in shots.

The Skating Saints will fly home and begin prepping for a big weekend at Appleton Arena as the Scarlet and Brown open ECAC play on Legends of Appleton weekend against RPI on Friday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. Then on Saturday, the team will take on Union as St. Lawrence University and the St. Lawrence Hockey Alumni Association will be inducting former Charles W. Appleton II Head Men's Hockey Coach Joe Marsh into the Legends of Appleton. He will be formally recognized for his tremendous contributions to both the men's and women's programs – in addition to his leadership within and loyalty to the Laurentian and North Country community.
