In a battle of the last two teams undefeated in Liberty League conference play, the St. Lawrence women's basketball team defeated Vassar 99-81 on Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to improve to 10-0.
Five Saints scored in double figures, led by
Olivia Barringer's season high 19.
Katie Frederick and
Dylan Watkiss each had 18,
Ava McCann had 17, and
Sierra Sanson added a dozen to combine for 84 of the team's points.
The game was closer than the score line suggests. Vassar scored the first three points of the fourth quarter and the Saints led just 66-61. The Saints quickly responded with a five-point run to get the lead to double digits. From that point on the Saints' offense responded to any Brewer score, and won 99-81.
"That was an outstanding ballgame between two talented teams who play completely different styles," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "Really proud of the grit we showed today, there was a lot of energy spent out there and things didn't always work out, but we kept battling and then really put it all together in the fourth quarter. Very nice win on the road against a solid opponent."
The Saints shot a season high 56-percent from the field, and 61-percent in the second half. McCann had five 3-pointers, and Watkiss added four of her own.
Sarah Gillooly led all scorers with 24 for the Brewers. Eliza Srinivasan and Julia Harvey each had 17, and Dani Douglas had 14.
The Saints controlled the boards, and came down with 56 rebounds to the Brewers' 27. Frederick led the way with 15, which is her season average, for her eighth double-double of the season. Barringer had a dozen rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
