Frederick Hits Milestone in Overtime Thriller

Senior Katie Frederick hit the 1,000 career rebound mark in the 71-70 loss to Ithaca on Friday night in Burkman Gymnasium.

Frederick became the first Saint to grab 1,000 boards. Earlier this season, she surpassed Kris Krablin's 886 rebounds, a record that had stuck since 1978, to be the all-time leading rebounder. Frederick also reached 1,000 career points this season on December 4 during the win against Skidmore, becoming the first player in St. Lawrence women's basketball history to reach both 1,000 points and rebounds.

The Saints closed out the first half on a 16-5 run to go into the break up 39-11. Olivia Barringer was 6-for-6 from the floor in the first half to lead St. Lawrence.

In the third quarter, St. Lawrence shot just two for 20, and were outscored 21-7 to go into the final 10 minutes trailing by three.

The Bombers extended that to a nine-point lead with just over three minutes to go. Back-to-back layups from Barringer and Ava McCann closed the gap to five, Dylan Watkiss came down with an offensive rebound and hit a 3-pointer to make it a two point game, and in the final seconds Watkiss hit a layup through traffic to tie the game at 63 and send it to overtime.

The teams traded buckets, and Frederick hit the Saints first four points in extra time to lead 67-65. A 3-pointer from Olivia Middleton put the Saints up five with two and a half to play. Grace Cannon got a steal that led to a layup for the Bombers, and teammate Emily Dorn connected a minute later to bring Ithaca to within one point. Cannon hit a floater in the paint to take the 71-70 lead with less than 10 seconds to play. The Saints got a decent look but could not get it to fall, and Ithaca served them their first loss of the season.

"Great ball game in the gym," said head coach Dan Roiger. "Ithaca is the defending champion and they played like it tonight. We hit them very hard in the first half and they responded in the first 15 minutes of the second half and we couldn't get it together. We responded at the end, but in an OT game by one point, all those plays where we didn't compete in the third quarter came back to haunt us. Our team has to learn to play with more intensity to beat a championship team, and hopefully this will be a good experience for them."

Cannon led all players with 22 points. Cara Volpe had 16 for the Bombers, and Dorn added 12 off the bench.

Barringer finished with 16 for the Saints, McCann added a dozen, and both Watkiss and Frederick finished with 11. Frederick finished with 13 rebounds on the night, and has hit double figures in that category in each game of the season.

Despite shooting 10-percent in the third quarter, St. Lawrence finished shooting 42.6-percent from the floor, and nine of 26 from deep. Ithaca connected on 41.8-percent of their shots, and were just two for 12 from three.
