Aly McLeod gave the Saints an early lead and
Lucy Morgan stopped 23 shots, leading the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 4-0 shutout win over RPI in an ECAC Hockey matchup on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena in Canton, New York.
Â
Aly McLeod was the first to score, giving the Scarlet and Brown a 1-0 lead.
Nara Elia sent the puck along the boards to
Abby Hustler just above the right face-off circle, and Hustler passed it to McLeod, who sent a one-timer into the net at the 11:05 mark.
Â
The Saints outshot RPI 11-10 after the first.
Â
Elia scored her second goal of the weekend early in the second, putting St. Lawrence up 2-0 five minutes into the period. McLeod took the face-off at the right circle, and Elia picked up the loose puck and slipped a backhander past RPI goalie Amanda Rampado for her second goal of the weekend.
Â
Britney Gout was the next to score for the Saints, increasing the Saints' lead to 3-0.
Shailynn Snow got possession of a loose puck along the boards and sent it to Gout from the corner. Gout fired off a one-timer wrist shot for her fifth goal of the season.
Â
The Scarlet and Brown maintained the edge on shots in the second, outshooting the Engineers 15-3.
Â
Rachel Bjorgan rounded out the scoring for St. Lawrence for the 4-0 victory. Melissa Jeffries caused a turnover at center ice and passed the puck to Bjorgan, who carried it into the zone and sent a wrister stick-side into the net.
Â
RPI nearly got on the scoreboard late in the third off a rebound shot while on the power-play, but Morgan stopped the shot for her fourth shutout of the year. She finished the game with 23 saves, while Rampado had 29.
Â
"Coming into the game we knew it would be important to get an early lead like we did last time vs. RPI," said head coach
Chris Wells '92. "Fortunately we scored in the first on a nice transition rebound goal and scored two pretty goals on the second to get some space. It was one of our better efforts of the year with many players contributing whether they were on the score sheet or not!"
Â
Â
St. Lawrence went 36-for-54 at the face-off circle and successfully killed off all four of their penalties.
Â
Morgan also earned her fourth shutout of the season, which matches her single season record of four from last season, ranking fifth in the Saints' record book. Her eight total career shutouts places her seventh on the career shutout list.
Â
Amanda Rampado finished with 29 saves for the Engineers.
Â
With the win, the Saints now improved 10-9-5 overall and 6-4-2 in conference play, while RPI fell to 8-15-0 and 5-9-0.
Â
St. Lawrence will hit the road next weekend to play Dartmouth College on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
