Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bench Boosts Saints in Win Over Herons

The bench contributed 32 points as the St. Lawrence women's basketball team topped William Smith 84-69 on Saturday in Canton, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon.

Cam Roberts and Olivia Middleton had 15 and 11 points, respectively, off of the bench. Ava McCann had five 3-pointers on her way to 25 points. Katie Frederick recorded a 14 point, 11 rebound double-double.

St. Lawrence closed the first quarter with an eight to four run, to lead at the first break 23-14. The Saints buckled down and gave up just eight second quarter points, and extended their lead to 43-22 at half time. The team shot 50-percent from the floor in the first half.

St. Lawrence kept their foot on the gas and shot 55.56-percent in the third quarter, and went into the final ten minutes leading by 26 points, with a score of 70-44. The Herons refused to roll over, and lowered the deficit to just 12 with just over a minute to play, but the Saints held on to win 84-69.

"Our first half intensity and energy were spectacular," said head coach Dan Roiger, "we really came out with focus and executed well on both ends of the floor. It didn't matter who we had in the game, we just played at a very high level, making very few mistakes. It was one of our best halves of the season. We were up and down in the second half, William Smith would have a big run and then we followed it with one of our own to get back to a sizable lead, but we had lost the same level of focus and intensity we had in the first half. Cam Roberts had a great game today, what a big boost to our team coming in off the bench to get 15 points on only nine shots and grabbing six boards and playing solid defense. With Olivia Barringer missing another game, it really helped us in making up for her absence. Combined with Sierra, those two made nine of 13 shots, an outstanding contribution. And Katie Frederick was very composed today and gathered herself on offense and made every shot. Against the posts of William Smith, that's not easy to do, they are good players."

Dylan Watkiss had five rebounds, four points, and three assists in what might seem like a quiet night, but when she was on the court the Saints outscored the Herons by 32 points. The next highest plus-minus was 13 from Frederick, McCann, and Roberts.

The trio of Brooke Jarvis, Lauren DeVaney, and Olivia Parisi scored 55 of the Herons points, led by Jarvis' 22. The team shot 41.9-percent on 62 shots from the floor.

The Saints finished with a field goal percentage of 45.2, which is the fourth time the team shot over 45-percent from the floor this season.
