Shannon Rhone scored a team-best 14 points and the St. Lawrence women's basketball team used a big third quarter to beat the Raptors of Bard 72-56Â in a Liberty League matchup on Monday afternoon in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
Bard, who have yet to win a conference game this season, led the Saints for the majority of the first half. The Raptors started the game scoring eight of the first 10 points, but the Saints fought back and tied the game just before halftime.
The score was even 33-33 at the break, and the stats reflected an evenly matched game.
St. Lawrence shot slightly better from the floor, but Bard shot better from the free throw line. Bard's Christina Kiser had 16 points in the first half and was a perfect eight for eight from the line. Five separate Saints had four or more points.
The second half started with four and a half scoreless minutes, until Rhone banked in a deep three to give the Saints the 36-33 lead. That sparked the St. Lawrence offense, and the Saints outscored Bard 23-5 in the third quarter to go into the final ten minutes up 56-38.
Bard was able to get their offense going again in the fourth quarter, starting with a 10-5 run, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit from the third quarter, allowing the Scarlet and Brown to hold onto the win.Â
"Good win tonight," said head coach
Dan Roiger, "wasn't our best by any means, but it is hard to drive 6 hours and be ready to go. It took us the first half to get started, but we had a gerat third quarter that won the game for us."
Katie Frederick finished with a 12-point, 15-rebound double-double and four blocks, while
Stella Davis added 10 points for the Saints.
Olivia Middleton and
Nicole Jeffrey both recorded two steals.Â
Kiser led Bard with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Mae Redmond finished with 12.Â
St. Lawrence recorded 31 points off the bench and 13 points off turnovers and 13 second-chance points, while Bard also finished with 13 second-chance points.Â
