Two goals in the first period and two goals in the third powered the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 4-1 win over Princeton in ECAC Hockey action on Monday evening in Princeton, New Jersey.
Graduate-student
Skylar Podvey put the Saints on the board first, as four different members of the Scarlet and Brown squad added their name to the scoresheet.
Podvey netted her third goal of the season, just two minutes and 58 seconds into the first period.
Hillary Sterling's original back-handed shot drew Tigers' goaltender Rachel McQuigge out of the net and a long sent the rebound out into the slot. Podvey fired a one-timer through traffic for the 1-0 lead.
It wasn't long before the Saints would get back on the board. This time
Jessica Poirier fought traffic, drifted to the right circle and lifted a wrister over the glove of McQuigge, off the crossbar and in, putting the Scarlet and Brown up 2-0 with just over four minutes remaining in the first.
Princeton looked to bring the game back in range, as Mariah Keopple took a wide shot from the left of
Lucy Morgan and what looked like a lucky bounce, brought the game back within one on the power play at 17:56.
After two periods of play, the Tigers held a 31-26 lead in shots, including leading 19-16 in shots of goal.
The Tigers put the pressure on to start the third, but Morgan was up to the task, allowing the Saints to hold onto their 2-1 advantage.
Grace Kuipers was sent to the box for hooking and the Scarlet and Brown produced some solid changes on the power play. The Tigers managed to kill off the penalty, but just as the penalty clock expired,
Abby Hustler got the puck to
Rachel Teslak at the point, Teslak then fired a shot under the blocker of McQuigge for the 3-1 lead and her fourth goal of the season.
Less than a minute later off the faceoff,
Shailynn Snow circled behind the Princeton goal and found
Brittney Gout waiting on the doorstep to make it 4-1 Saints at 7:24.
"We wanted to get off to a good start after the long trip down tonight and we did," said head coach
Chris Wells '92. "We got some nice bounces that led to some very nice goals. Lucy made a couple key saves when it was 2-1 and the two quick ones in the third gave us some breathing room that we haven't had in a long time. It's been an interesting return since the holiday to say the least and tonight's game brings some well deserved smiles for our team!"
Lucy Morgan made 27 saves for St. Lawrence, while McQuigge finished with 19 saves.
The Saints finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Tigers went 1-for-5. Princeton finished with a 28-23 edge in shots on goal.
