Saints Women's Squash Drop Close Match To Franklin and Marshall

In their first match in 43 days, the 21st-ranked St. Lawrence University women's squash team fell 5-4 to 17th-ranked Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. on Sunday afternoon.

"That was our best result against Franklin and Marshall for the women's team, but it was disappointing to come so close to winning and really boosting the team's ranking," said head coach Scott Denne "However, tomorrow is a new day and we're looking forward to turning things around tomorrow against Brown."

For the first time this year the Saints did not get a win out of their number one spot but were able to get wins from their number 2 and three spots as captains Sanna Koivumäki and Makyla Kelley each earned wins. Koivumäki won her first two sets 11-3, 11-9 over Aryaa Ogale before dropping the third set 7-11. The junior battled back to get the 11-7 win in the fourth set to take the match. Kelley went up 2-0 on Catherine Costin, but the match was forced to a fifth set after Costin won the third and fourth sets 11-8, 11-1. Kelley came out on top 11-7 in the final set to take the win.

With the wins Koivumäki and Kelley remain perfect on the season at 7-0 each.

Margaret Fleischner won a thriller in the number seven spot 3-2 over Zoe Quayle in her first match of the season. After going down two sets to none, Fleischner won the third and fourth sets 11-8 to force the deciding fifth set. The sophomore ended up with the 3-2 win after winning 13-11 in the final set. Senior Kat Leiva earned the Saints' lone sweep in the top-nine winning 11-6, 11-6, 11-4 over Iman Jaikishan in the number nine spot. Promise Dorsey-Butler also played a match in the number 10 spot earning a 11-4, 11-7, 11-5 win over the Diplomats' Adina Rubenstein.

St. Lawrence will be right back in action tomorrow as the Saints travel to Providence, R.I. to take on Brown University at 11:00 a.m.
