Tyler Grochot was 16-for-34 passing with two touchdowns and 219 passing yards, while
Sean McCormack made six catches for 68 yards and
Peyton Schmitt rushed for 81 yards to lead the St. Lawrence University football team to a 27-14 win over Morrisville State under the lights on Friday in Morrisville, New York.
Jacob Dreisbach led the Saints' defensive unit with 11 tackles, while
Brian Casazza finished with eight and
Victor Gamberoni recorded seven.
The Saints opened scoring at the 7:34 mark of the first quarter, as Grochot found
Robert Coll with a 17-yard pass for the touchdown.
Ian Doin's kick for the extra point was good to put the Saints up 7-0.
St. Lawrence extended its lead to 10-0 with 52 seconds remaining in the first frame on a 29-yard field goal from Doin.
Morrisville responded as Mustangs' quarterback Kade Gabler found Jarrell Chaney with a 17-yard pass and the extra-point conversion from kicker Owen Cole brought the game back within three with 12:29 to play in the second quarter.
The Mustangs stood strong, holding the Saints from a second touchdown and forcing the field goal. Doin converted on his second attempt of the game with a 23-yard field goal for a 13-7 lead with 8:04 to play in the half.
With Morrisville on the drive late in the second quarter,
Grady Harrington intercepted a pass from Alek Britton, putting the Saints in control.
Jamie Battaglia rushed for 23 yards for the touchdown. Doin's kick was good giving St. Lawrence a 20-7 lead heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Saints capitalized on a Morrisville penalty. At the Morrisville 46-yard line, Grochot competed a 29-yard pass to Coll and then a 17-yard pass to
Joseph Ott for his first career touchdown to extend the Saints lead. After the kick from Doin, the Saints led 27-7 with 8:48 to play in the quarter.
The Mustangs managed to get back on the board, as Britten brought the ball in himself for Morrisville's second touchdown of the night. Cole's kick bought the score up 27-14, still in favor of the Saints with 13:09 to play.
After a scoreless final 13 minutes and two interceptions from Gamberoni and
Ryan Watson, the Saints claimed their second win of the season.
For the Mustangs, Britten was 22-for-49 passing for 334 yards, while Toure Hall made 10 catches for 141 yards and Jarrell Chaney made four catches for 60 yards. Alex McBurnie led Morrisville's rushing game with 38 yards. Ernesto Mitchell finished with 17 tackles.
The Saints had an advantage in first downs (26-21), time of possession (35:11-24:49) and rushing yards (190-94).
St. Lawrence improved to 2-1 on the season, while Morrisville fell to 0-3.
The Scarlet and Brown will return to Leckonby Stadium to host Castleton University on Saturday, September 25 for Family Weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
