Grochot Breaks Two Career Records, Saints Dominate Castleton 55-3

Saints' quarterback Tyler Grochot continued to add his name on the top of the St. Lawrence University football record book, taking over first place in career pass attempts and career passing yards following a 55-3 win over Castleton University on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.

Grochot currently tops the books with 864 career pass attempts and 5,818 career passing yards. Both records were previously held by Mike Lefflbine '16, who held the records with 855 attempts and 5,660 yards, respectively.

"Tyler has operated in this offense for two and a half years and has performed at a very high level," said head coach Dan Puckhaber. "For him to set the record in the first part of his junior year shows how productive he has been since he got to campus."

Running back Peyton Schmitt opened scoring for the Saints with a 58-yard run, scoring his first career touchdown. Ian Doin's first kick of the day was good, giving St. Lawrence a 7-0 lead.

The Spartans drove for 61 yards in their first attempt of the afternoon, but were left with a 21-yard field goal from Noah Crossman, for Castleton's lone scoring play of the day, making it 7-3.

It was all Saints after that, as a 73-yard drive and a one-yard run from Jamie Battaglia and Doin's second kick increased the lead to 14-3.

Opening the second quarter, was Tyler Liddy, who caught a 25-yard pass from Grochot. Doin's kick was good again, putting the Saints up 21-3. At 9:36 of the second frame Battaglia scored his second touchdown of the afternoon with a five-yard run.

Those four plays weren't enough for the Saints as Andrew Murphy caught an 85-yard pass from Grochot for the Saints' fifth touchdown. Jimmy Bocock's kick was good for the 34-3 lead. With time winding down in the first half, Sean McCormack caught a pass that was bobbled by a group of players for the 41-3 lead as the clock ran out.

Schmitt scored his second touchdown of the day with a 45-yard run at 10:04 of the third quarter and Cole Salyards caught a 37-yard pass from Daniel Lawther at 9:14 of the fourth to close out scoring for the Saints.

Grochot finished the game 11-for-16 passing for 279 yards. McCormack led the Saints with four catches for 4 yards, while Salyards had three catches for 45 yards. Schmitt rushed for 155 yards on just 10 carries, and Cameron Giunta added 41 yards on 10 carries as the Saints averaged 7.4 yards per rushing attempt.

Spartan's quarterback Jacob McCarthy was 24-for-36 passing with 208 yards, while Devin Wollner rushed for 30 yards on eight attempts and Tucker Kreh led Castleton's ground game with 62 yards on five carries.

St. Lawrence held a 23-17 advantage in first downs and rushed 267 yards to Castleton's 52.

The Saints are off next weekend, but will head to Schenectady, New York to take on Union in their Liberty League opener on October 9. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
