Senior quarterback
Tyler Grochot was 22-for-29 passing with five touchdowns and 232 passing yards to lead the St. Lawrence University football team to a 37-7 win over Norwich in the fourth Hoffman Cup contest between the two long-time non-league rivals on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.
Grochot was named St. Lawrence's Most Valuable Player in today's win, marking his third MVP award in the Hoffman Cup game during his time with the Saints.
St. Lawrence struck first with a 61-yard drive, Grochot found
Robert Coll on a seven-yard pass to put the Saints up 6-0 with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter. A successful extra-point kick from
Ian Doin put the Saints up 7-0.
The Cadets were quick to respond, scoring a touchdown of their own less than three minutes later. Norwich quarterback Mitchell Theal threw a 49-yard pass to Trevor Chase and Zach Buchy tacked on the extra point to tie the game 7-7.
It was all Saints from then on, as Grochot connected with
Andrew Murphy for a 61-yard pass. Doin's second kick of the day was good giving St. Lawrence a 14-7 lead with 14:09 remaining in the half.
Off a 62-yard drive late in the second quarter, Grochot found
TJ Cornacchia with a nine-yard pass, giving St. Lawrence a 20-7 halftime advantage.
The Saints kick started the third quarter with a 26-yard field goal from Doin, increasing the lead to 23-7.
Murphy scored his second touchdown of the game with 14:14 remaining in the fourth and
Sean McCormack capped the scoring with a catch off a 23-yard pass from Grochot just about halfway through the final quarter.
Murphy finished the day with seven catches for 91 yards, while McCormack,
Shane Clarke and Cornacchia all caught three passes and combined for 114 yards for the Saints.
Peyton Schmitt led the Saints' rushing game with 91 yards on 14 attempts, while
Jamie Battaglia went 49 yards on 12 attempts.
For the Cadets, Theal was 13-for-26 passing for 150 yards and one touchdown, while Chase made six catches for 90 yards. Running back Justin Bryant earned MVP honors for the Cadets with 20 yards on five attempts.
With the win, the Saints improved to 1-1 on the season, while Norwich fell to 0-2.
The Saints will have a quick turnaround as they head to Morrisville to take on the Mustangs under the lights on Friday, September 17. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
