Game Recap: Softball |

Saints Drop Pair to Ithaca

Meredith Rose went 2-for-3 and Lauryn Best hit an RBI double, but the St. Lawrence University softball team dropped a pair of Liberty League games to Ithaca, 10-2 and 5-1, on Sunday afternoon in Ithaca.

The Saints fell to 5-18 overall and 5-15 in conference play, while Ithaca improved to 21-5, 17-3.

The Saints will go on the road to face Rensselaer in a doubleheader on Wednesday, then faces Union in a four-game series this weekend to close out the regular season.

Game 1: Ithaca 10, St. Lawrence 2 (5 innings)

The Bombers scored two runs in the first inning and added four in the third to take a 6-0 lead, but the Saints struck for two runs in the top of the fourth inning, as Carolyn Holran hit a sacrifice fly and two runs scored on the play after an error by a Ithaca player.

But the Yellowjackets' offense proved to be too much, as they added three runs in the fourth and Daniella Mulvey's RBI triple in the fifth inning invoked the eight-run rule to end the game.

Skylar Hein hit her ninth double of the year and the 29th of her career to move into sole possession of third place on the Saints' all-time doubles list. Cora Ferguson also had a hit for the Saints.

Four players had two hits for Ithaca, including Haley Gaffney, who had a triple and three RBI, and Mulvey, who knocked in two runs.

Beth Fleming threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out 12 and allowing two walks, to earn the win for the Bombers.

Game 2: Ithaca 5, St. Lawrence 1

Ithaca once again scored two runs in the first inning, then added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.

Rose hit a single to lead off the seventh inning, and Best hit an RBI double to score Rose from first to account for the Saints' lone run.

Ferguson also had a single for the Saints, who played a clean game defensively. Saints' pitchers Gabby Slater, Macey Davis and Jacee Casebolt combined to allow just six hits.

Riley Piromalli allowed four hits in the complete-game victory for Ithaca, striking out six and walking one.

Gaffney hit a two-run home run, and Haley White added a solo shot to lead the Bombers at the plate.
