Game Recap: Softball |

Slater, Lyndaker and Hein Star in Softball Sweep

Gabby Slater posted two wins in the circle, allowing just one run in nine and two-thirds innings pitched, McKailey Lyndaker was 4-for-6 with a triple and two RBI, and Skylar Hein and Tori Rotundo helped propel St. Lawrence to a come-from behind win in the second game to lead the Saints' softball team to a sweep of RIT in a Liberty League doubleheader on Monday in Canton.

St. Lawrence won the opener, 5-0, then scored seven unanswered runs to come back from an early 4-1 deficit in the second game to win, 8-4.

With the wins, the Saints improved to 5-12 overall and 5-9 in league play. St. Lawrence has won five of its last seven games and is now in sole possession of fourth place in the Liberty League standings.

"Today was a great day," said St. Lawrence head coach Elisa VanKirk. "We were competitive for 14 innings. We made adjustments at the plate, we fought when we were down, and we played sound, fundamental softball. It was a complete team effort today."

The Saints will go on the road to play a league doubleheader at Skidmore on Tuesday, a makeup series originally scheduled for April 2, then return home for a doubleheader against Ithaca on Saturday.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 5, RIT 0

Slater picked up all but two outs in the opener, scattering five hits with five strikeouts and one walk, to pick up her second win of the season. She also hit a double and drove in two runs to help her own cause.

Lyndaker and Carolyn Holran were both 2-for-3 to lead St. Lawrence at the plate. The Saints scored single runs in the first and third innings, then increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth before tacking on one final insurance run in the sixth inning.

Meredith Rose hit an RBI double and Lyndaker had an RBI triple for the Saints.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 8, RIT 4

After falling behind 4-1 in the second inning, the Saints chipped away at the lead with one run in the fourth and two more to tie the game in the fifth inning. Hein gave St. Lawrence its first lead of the game with an RBI single through the middle of the infield in the sixth inning, and Tori Rotundo hit a three run double down the left field line to push the lead to four runs.

Hein was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Lyndaker was 2-for-3, and Rose was 2-for-4.

Raquel Estrada hit an RBI double and later scored on an error to give RIT a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Hein cut the lead to one with an RBI single in the bottom half of the frame, but Estrada struck again in the second, this time with a two-run single to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.

Lyndaker cut the lead to two with an RBI single in the fourth. Rose added an RBI single in the fifth, and later scored on a throwing error on a ground ball to third base.

Estrada was 3-for-3 for the Tigers, while Alexis Smith was 3-for-4.

Slater again picked up the win, pitching a total of three and a third innings; she started the game and then came back in for the final three innings in relief, allowing one run on five hits with four walks and one strikeout. Macey Davis pitched a solid 2.2 innings, allowing two hits with no walks and one strikeout.
