Tori Rotundo hit an RBI double to left center to send
Cora Ferguson home from first base in the top of the ninth inning to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to a 5-4 win in the second game of a Liberty League doubleheader with Clarkson on Saturday afternoon at Scott Field in Potsdam.
Clarkson won the first game of the doubleheader, 3-2, on a walkoff RBI single by Olivia Zoeller in the bottom of the seventh. St. Lawrence is now 2-12 overall and 2-8 in the Liberty League, while Clarkson moved to 11-5, 6-2. The two teams also split a doubleheader in Canton on Friday.
"I'm so proud of the entire team for their effort and fight these last four games," said Saints' head coach
Elisa VanKirk. "Everyone contributed. We were in all four games and we were able to capitalize when we needed to. We had tremendous contributions from our entire pitching staff and multiple hitters were able to contribute. We are very excited for the next half of our season."
The Saints will take some time off for final exams, then resume their season on Saturday with a doubleheader at home vs. Rensselaer on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Game 1: Clarkson 3, St. Lawrence 2
Clarkson built a 2-0 lead on a solo home run by Sarah Vaccaro in the second inning and an RBI single by Kayla Robert in the third, but the Saints tied it up in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by
Skylar Hein and an RBI single by
Zola Braswell.
Bridget Twaits led off with a single for Clarkson in the seventh, then advanced to second base on a passed ball, setting up Zoeller's game-winning hit.
Hein was 2-for-3 in the opener for the Saints, while Twaits was 3-for-4 to lead Clarkson's offense. Robert was 2-for-3 with a double.
Macey Davis started the game in the circle for the Saints, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout in 4.2 innings pitched.Â
Zoeller earned the win for Clarkson, strikeout out 16 and allowing four hits with no walks in a complete-game effort.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 5, Clarkson 4 (9 innings)
Clarkson once again jumped out to an early lead, as Robert hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and the Golden Knights added a pair of unearned runs in the third to build a 4-0 advantage.
St. Lawrence was able to come back to tie it again, however, as Rotundo hit a two-run double in the fourth, and
Carolyn Holran followed with a triple to score Rotundo to cut the lead to 4-3. The Saints added an unearned run on a sacrifice bunt in the fifth to tie the score, and neither team was able to mount much of a scoring threat in the sixth, seventh or eighth innings.
Rotundo made Clarkson pay, however, after Ferguson reached on an error to lead off the ninth, smacking a double to left center field to score Ferguson from first to give the Saints their first lead of the day, 5-4.Â
Sam Short led off the bottom of the ninth with a single for Clarkson, but
Gabby Slater was able to retire the next three batters to earn the win.
Rotundo was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI for the Saints, and
McKailey Lyndaker added a double for the Saints.
Robert was 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Golden Knights.
Slater pitched eight innings to earn the win, allowing two unearned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
