First-year
Abby Doin led the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team with 11 points and grabbed five rebounds, but the Saints fell to Clarkson 59-48 in non-league action on Tuesday evening in Potsdam, New York.
Â
Doin shot 5-for-11 from the floor, while
Olivia Middleton and
Kristen Varin both finished with nine points and
Cam Roberts grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Middleton also recorded three assists, while Roberts tallied two blocks and
Sierra Sanson and
Hannah Chaffer recorded two steals each.
Â
The Golden Knights got an early jump on the Saints, leading 17-11 after the first 10 minutes of play and after an evenly paced second quarter, Clarkson carried a seven-point lead in to the third, leading 31-24 at halftime.
Â
A 3-pointer from Doin midway through the third frame brought the Saints within five points, but a breakdown on defense allowed the Golden Knights to build a double-digit lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Â
Despite matching points in the fourth quarter (13-13), the Saints were unable to overcome the deficit from the third quarter to overtake Clarkson.
Â
"We didn't have it today," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "We didn't execute our offense well, we didn't shoot the ball well, and we would play good defense for 15-20 seconds and then have major breakdowns to give up layups, open looks, or foul. We worked hard at practice and got better this week, but did not carry it into the game."
Â
"Despite our loss, we are still winning. We are getting to play games and having two hours of normalcy in life. In addition, our six freshmen and two sophomores are getting great experience that they wouldn't necessarily get if we had our full team and they will be better for it in the long run, and from that aspect, we are winning!"
Â
Molly Stewart led the Golden Knights with 18 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the floor, while Hannah Earl and Carly Assimon totaled 12 and 10, respectively. Rachel Marion led Clarkson with 10 rebounds.
Â
Clarkson improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Saints fell to 1-3.
Â
St. Lawrence will return to Potsdam for a 1:30 p.m. matchup with the Golden Knights on Sunday, March 14.
