Saints Swept by Rochester in Liberty League Opener

Jen Carson went a combined 4-for-7 with three home runs and nine RBI to lead the University of Rochester to a Liberty League doubleheader sweep of St. Lawrence, 10-1 and 11-2, on Thursday afternoon at Saints Softball Field.

Carson was 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBI in the opener, then went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and a grand slam in the nightcap.

Skylar Hein led the Saints, going 3-for-5 with three doubles on the day.

After playing five home games to open the season, the Saints, now 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League, will play their first road games this season on Saturday at the University of Rochester. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Game 1: Rochester 10, St. Lawrence 1 (5 innings)

Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Hannah Keiper, and Carson doubled the margin with a leadoff home run in the third. Toni Anne Hahn added an RBI single, and two runners scored on a wild pitch and an error to give the Yellowjackets a 5-0 lead in the third.

Hahn plated another run with an RBI single in the fourth inning, and two more runs scored on wild pitches to increase Rochester's lead to 8-0 in the top of the fourth inning.

Hein got the Saints' offense started with a leadoff double in the fourth inning, and pinch runner Emily Desjardins scored on an RBI single by Carolyn Holran two batters later.

But Rochester added two more runs in the fifth on an error and an RBI single by Alexis Pope to go up by nine, and the Saints were unable to respond in the bottom half to prevent the loss by the eight-run rule.

Hahn was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Emily Sharlach earned the win, allowing just one unearned run on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts in a five-inning complete game win.

Game 2: Rochester 11, St. Lawrence 2

Carson hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to give Rochester a 5-0 lead, and capped her day with a grand slam in the seventh to give the Yellowjackets a commanding 11-2 lead.

The Yellowjackets once again got the lead early, with Alizah Ayon plating a run with an RBI single through the left side in the top of the first. She added an RBI triple in the third to give Rochester a 2-0 lead. After Carson hit her second home run of the day, Hahn scored on a wild pitch to give Rochester a 6-0 lead in the fifth.

Sofia Adams hit an RBI triple to left center in the sixth inning, and Hein followed with a RBI double into the gap in right center to cut Rochester's lead to 6-2, but Alexis Klee hit a bases loaded single in the seventh, and Carson followed with her grand slam.

Ayon was 2-for-2 with two RBI, while Marissa Russo was 2-for-2 and Klee was 2-for-4 for the Yellowjackets, who improved to 4-3 overall, 2-0 in the Liberty League.

Hein was 2-for-3 with two doubles for the Saints.

Abbie Biggs earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits in five-plus innings. Sharlach, who came into the game with a 6-2 lead and runners on the corners, was nearly perfect over the final two innings, walking just one batter in a hitless two innings to earn the save.

Gabby Slater threw a complete game for the Saints.
