Saints Fall to Roos, 11-3

Jordan Knapp was 5-for-5 with three RBI to lead SUNY Canton to a 11-3 win over St. Lawrence in a non-league softball game on Wednesday afternoon at Saints Softball Field.

Skylar Hein led the Saints with a two-run double, Meredith Rose was 2-for-3, and first-year catcher Margo Hopper had an RBI triple and two walks in her first collegiate game.

Angelina LoPiccolo was 2-for-5 with three RBI for the Roos, while Mackenzie Currie and Madison Austin were both 2-for-3. Sophia Harris was 2-for-5 for SUNY Canton.

The Roos jumped out to a 1-0 lead with four consecutive two-out singles in the top of the first inning, with Alaina Beane plating the run on a hit to center field. Saints starting pitcher Gabby Slater, however, struck out the next batter to end the threat.

SUNY Canton, however, added four runs in the second inning and five more in the third to build a 10-0 lead.

LoPicollo and Knapp hit RBI singles, and Kayla Chavarri and Shaylyn DeVito drew bases loaded walks to plate the runs in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, LoPicollo hit a two-run double, Knapp added an RBI double and later scored from third on a throwing error on a stolen base by DeVito, who had an RBI single.

The Saints got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Rose leading off with a single and later scoring on Hopper's triple to deep right field. St. Lawrence cut the lead to seven on a hard line drive to right center by Hein in the fifth inning, extending the game by avoiding a loss due to the eight-run rule.

SUNY Canton added another run on an RBI single by Knapp in the top of the sixth inning, and the game was called due to darkness with two runners on and no outs in the home half of the frame.

Chavarri earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks in four innings. Macey Davis was effective in relief for the Saints, allowing three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in four innings of work.

The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader with a 3:45 p.m. game one start, was delayed due to rain and switched to a single contest.
