Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Fall to Clarkson in Season Opener

Sophomore transfer Sierra Sanson scored 12 points and first-year Cam Roberts recorded 10 rebounds as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team fell to Clarkson, 75-51, in a non-league game Saturday afternoon in Potsdam, New York to open the 2020-21 season.

Sanson shot 5-for-8 from the floor and recorded four rebounds, while classmates Shannon Rhone added eight points and two steals and Abby Doin and Kristen Varin each finished with eight points.

Clarkson took an early 8-0 lead to start the game, but an 11-0 counter run for the Saints allowed them to regain control and the lead. After the first 10 minutes of play, the Golden Knights held a 20-13 lead.

Hannah Earl set up Mariah Benavides for the 3-pointer as Clarkson worked to extend its lead to 31-17 with 5:09 to play in the second quarter. The Golden Knights pushed their lead to 42-19 by halftime, outscoring the Saints 22-6 in the frame, while shooting 47.06 percent from the floor.

The Saints evenly paced the Golden Knights through the third and fourth quarters, scoring just one point less than Clarkson (32-33), but the Saints were unable to recover from the second-quarter deficit.

Despite the loss, getting back on the court was a win for the Saints.

"I was just tickled pink to see the girls get on the court and be able to play," said head coach Dan Roiger. "That was our goal and we did it through all the challenges we faced. The game was rough, we got scatterbrained initially, which is expected when you have seven new players and a sophomore. But we improved throughout the game and our squad got reps that we just can't give them in practice with only eight players. It was a great start!"

Molly Stewart led the Golden Knights with 16 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the line, while Earl posted a double-double with 15 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. Stewart also added six rebounds and three steals.

The Saints recorded 12 points off the bench to the Golden Knight's eight, while Clarkson converted 18 points off turnovers to the Saints' 10.

The Saints fell to 0-1 on the season, while Clarkson improved to 1-1.

Just a reminder, the Saints' schedule will be released on a week-by-week basis to avoid any confusion with scheduling and rescheduling that may occur do to COVID-19 protocols.
