Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Caleigh Burchfield '22

Saints Fall to No. 8 Clarkson, 1-0

After 59 scoreless minutes, a late power-play goal was all it took, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team closed the weekend with a 1-0 loss to eighth-ranked Clarkson University on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena in Canton, New York.

St. Lawrence was on their heels for much of the first period, and had only had four shots on net compared to Clarkson's 11. However, Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan stopped each one to keep the game tied at 0-0.

The Scarlet and Brown came out stronger in the second, and gained momentum after some good chances on an early power-play and a successful penalty kill. The Saints finished the period with six shots on net, while Clarkson had five.

Both teams came out hungry in the third to defeat their Route 11 rival, and Morgan continued to remain equal to the task, including a highlight-worthy glove save eight minutes into the third.

However, the Saints took a penalty at the 18:47 mark, and Morgan made several phenomenal saves to keep St. Lawrence in the game, but the Golden Knights were ultimately able to capitalize. With 26.2 seconds left and a scramble on the doorstep, Clarkson's Caitrin Lonergan found the puck and scored the game's only goal.

"Another hard fought game that could have gone either way," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "We have been pretty consistent all semester with our play and that will pay huge dividends for us as we get a nice break and get ready for the second semester sprint. The league and the games are so tight and it's a shame we don't have more to show for it point wise, because we certainly do deserve a bit more, But such is college athletics… a great teacher of everyday life. Happy holidays to everyone and thanks for the great support the first semester."

St. Lawrence was 0-for-3 on the power-play, and successfully killed off 2-of-3 penalties.

Clarkson netminder Michelle Pasiechnyk made 26 saves, while Morgan finished with 23.

The Saints now stand 7-8-5 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play, while Clarkson is now 16-2-3 and 6-1-1.

The Saints will return after the holiday break on January 7, when they head to Connecticut for a 6:00 pm puck drop against Quinnipiac University at People's United Center.
