Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Morgan Stops New Career Best, Sixth-Ranked Raiders Score in Overtime

Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan recorded a new career best, stopping 46 shots and Jessica Poirier scored her second goal of the season, but a late Colgate goal sent the game to overtime and the sixth-ranked Raiders topped the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team 2-1 at the Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, New York on Sunday afternoon.

The Saints, who made their first appearance on the ice following winter break and a series of postponements, moved to 7-9-5 on the season, while Colgate improved to 17-4-1

Abby Hustler nearly put the Saints up 1-0 with just about three minutes to play on a break-away opportunity, but Raiders' goaltender Kayle Osborne was up to the challenge.

After one period of play, the Raiders held a 12-8 advantage in shots on net.

The Saints opened the second frame on the power play and produced solid shots on goal from Rachel Bjorgan and Shailynn Snow.

The Raiders then looked to capitalize and rang a shot off the pipe for a solid opportunity, but the Saints were able to clear with just over 15 minutes to play.

Just about a minute later, a Colgate defender turned the puck over to Snow near the Colgate blue line, Snow looked for a tally on another breakaway opportunity, but Osborne shut down the Saints' offense once again.

But after two periods of play, the game remained scoreless and the Raiders held a 24-17 lead in shots.

After a little give-and-go action between Poirier and Laura Cote, Poirier's shot from the left circle was redirected by a Colgate skate and slipped past Osborne to give the Scarlet and Brown a 1-0 lead over the Raiders with 11:05 remaining in the third period. Cote and Chloé Puddifant assisted on the play.

With two minutes remaining, the Raiders pulled Osborne for the six-on-five advantage. Neena Brick capitalized on a redirect to score an extra-attacker goal and tie the game 1-1 with 37 seconds remaining in the third period.

Off the overtime faceoff, Kaitlyn O'Donohoe rushed the goal and lifted a shot past Morgan for her sixth goal of the season and the 2-1 overtime win for the Raiders.

"That was a real gutsy effort by our team tonight," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "Six weeks off, kids just coming back off protocols etc. and Lucy was outstanding all night. We love to be in the close games and we keep it interesting right until the end. We have had our hearts broken the last four games late, but certainly have a lot of experience in these games that we will rely on down the stretch. It was fun to get back out there in some competition!"

Morgan made 46 saves for St. Lawrence, while Osborne finished with 20 for Colgate.

Colgate finished with a 47-20 advantage in shots.

St. Lawrence rescheduled its game against Princeton for this Tuesday, January 18. Puck drop against the Tigers is scheduled for 2 p.m.
