Saints Women's Squash Wins A Pair Of 6-3 Matches To Sweep The Weekend

The Saints' top-four were dominant in both matches as the St. Lawrence University women's squash team earned back-to-back 6-3 wins over Hamilton College and Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Hamilton College.

"The women today did a great job and did it tough with two of our starting nine out," said head coach Scott Denne "We had some tough matchups with Promise coming back from down 2-0 to clinch the win for us. It was a great way to finish off the semester and we will be happy to be back on campus to ring the Victory Bell!"

In the opening match of the day Anannya Morey, and captains Sanna Koivumäki, and Makyla Kelley provided strong wins in the top-three. Morey swept her match in the No. 1 spot 11-8, 12-10, 11-3 over Eliana Good, then Koivumäki swept her No. 2 match 11-4, 11-8, 11-6 against Hamilton's Sarah Stonestreet. Kelley won her matchup in four sets 11-7, 11-3, 10-12, 11-7 over Hope Worcester to complete the top-three spot sweep.

Petra Derose played just as strong in the No. 4 spot winning in four sets 11-13, 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 against Eleanor Bailey. Kat Leiva and Promise Dorsey-Butler rounded out the Saints wins for the matchup. Leiva won her No. 6 match 12-10, 9-11, 13-11, 11-5, and Dorsey-Butler topped Madison Sakheim after being down two sets to none. The first-year lost the opening sets 11-13, 6-11, then stormed all the way back winning the next three sets 11-9, 11-9, and 11-6.

The Saints won six of their eight matches, but lost the No. 9 spot by default without a ninth player.

In their second match against Wesleyan, the Saints top-five was great once again. Morey backed up her first win of the day with a dominant 11-1, 11-1, 11-2 win over Anika Kewalramani. Captains Koivumäki and Kelley followed suit with 3-0 sweeps of their own. Koivumäki won her No. 2 spot match 11-0, 11-3, 11-5 over Wesleyan's Marangela James, while Kelley swept Portia Pliam 11-1, 12-10, 11-7.

DeRose and Dorsey-Butler each provided sweeps of their own in the No. 4 and 7 spots respectively. Meg Pruett rounded out the lineup with the sixth win with an 11-4, 6-11, 11-8, 11-4 win over Emma Smith.

The Scarlet and Brown will be off for over a month for the winter break and will come back on Friday, January 14th for a set of matches against Mount Holyoke and Chatham in Massachusetts, followed by a Saturday contest against Amherst College.
