Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Roll Past Roos, Improve to 9-0

The St. Lawrence women's basketball team remain unbeaten on the season following a 64-44 win against crosstown rival SUNY Canton on Friday in Burkman Gymnasium.

Olivia Middleton had a season-high 13 points off of the bench. Ava McCann added a dozen and Erin Kumler had 10 to pace the Saints' offense. Dylan Watkiss had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists in a team high 26 minutes.

The Saints hit four first quarter 3-pointers and held the Roos to just six points to go into the first break with a 19-6 lead. The height of St. Lawrence prevented Canton from any easy looks in the paint.

In the second quarter, the team exchanged jabs with neither team able to get a run going. Canton first-year Seattle Lettau hit a deep 3-pointer as time was expiring to bring the halftime score to 35-23 in favor of the Saints.

The Saints stepped up their defense in the third quarter, and extended the lead to 19 heading into the final ten minutes. Midway through the final period Watkiss came down with a defensive rebound and kicked it out to McCann on the break, who buried a 3-pointer to give the Saints their biggest lead at 24. The Saints would hold on to win 64-44.

"A very rusty performance today, but we did a nice job of adjusting during the game and playing solid defense," said head coach Dan Roiger. "I really liked the way we came out in the second half and had a great 12-3 run. Our players weren't happy with the second quarter performance and they played with more intensity. We still have a lot of learning to do and can keep getting more consistent to play better, but that is a process and getting out on the court after an 18-day break is the beginning. We are looking forward to the second half of the season."

The Roos' ran a balanced offense, with seven players scoring between five and seven points.

The Saints dominated the boards, grabbing 20 offensive rebounds and 31 defensive, while Canton came down with just 36 rebounds total.

The Saints return to Liberty League action next weekend, traveling to play Bard and Vassar on January 7 and 8, respectively.
