The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team got off to a hot start, and played stout defense all season, but were unable to sneak into the Liberty League Tournament with a 7-6-2 record and a 3-5-1 conference mark under the direction of
Sinead McSharry, who completed her fourth season for the Scarlet and Brown after missing the 2020 season.
Despite missing the playoffs, the Saints proved to be a difficult team to defeat. St. Lawrence was able to outscore their opponents 23-17 throughout the season and gave up three or more goals in a game just once.
One of the biggest reasons for this was the stellar goalkeeping of sophomore
Keely Snode, who was a star in her first season of action. Snode was 5-6-2 on the season and had a 1.16 goals-against average to go with a .848 save percentage. The sophomore also had two shutouts and was a part of two combined shutouts as well.
"Like any competitive program, we were disappointed not to make it to the playoffs this year," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "Whilst I thought we were unlucky in the few games that hurt us, we also must take responsibility for our luck. I think we all realized a little too late that our competitive advantage is one of our values – Unity. I was very impressed with our group in how they persevered and stayed true to who we are which was evident on senior day. I think we showed at the beginning and the end that it's tough to beat a team that has a strong sense of identity. We need more of that moving forward. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank this group of strong and supportive young women, our families, the seniors, our staff, the department, and the Laurentian community for all the support they gave us this year. We greatly appreciate you all!"
The Saints got off to a great start to the season going 3-0-1 in their first four games. After defeating SUNY Potsdam 3-1 in the season-opener at Sandy MacAllaster Field, St. Lawrence earned a marquee win in the North Country Classic over Stevens, who was ranked 14th in the preseason poll. The Scarlet and Brown then finished the North Country Classic by thumping New England College 4-0. After tying Nazareth 0-0 the following weekend, the first United Soccer Coaches poll was released with the Saints debuting in the 21st-ranked spot.
Next up on the schedule was Liberty League play for the Saints, who traveled to RPI. The Saints had a 1-0 lead going into the 84th-minute but gave up a questionable goal seconds before the game was called due to weather. St. Lawrence stayed undefeated but settled for the bad luck tie.
St. Lawrence beat Union the following weekend 2-1 but dropped a 2-0 decision to 22nd-ranked Middlebury the following day. The Saints slid down to the 23rd spot in the polls in what turned out to be their final week in the poll.
The Saints struggled to stop their slide losing the next three games to Ithaca, Clarkson, and RIT. St. Lawrence got back into the win column with a 2-1 win over Bard at Sandy MacAllaster Field but dropped the Saturday matchup with Vassar 2-0.
The Scarlet and Brown regained some goal-scoring touch and confidence with a 6-0 win over SUNY Canton late in the season. The confidence spilled over into the weekend as the Saints kept their playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 win at Skidmore College.
Entering the final weekend, the Saints playoff chances hinged on their ability to beat the 5th-ranked Herons or Bard's ability to beat Skidmore.
Isabel Silvia stunned William Smith with a goal 3:22 into the senior day matchup. The Herons had allowed just one other goal in the Liberty League all season. Silvia's goal was the first for the Saints against William Smith since the 2017 season.
The Saints battled hard, but ultimately fell 3-1 to the high-powered Herons, and learned the Raptors fell 4-0 to end their playoff hopes.
