Skylar Podvey scored her second goal of the season on the power play, but Clarkson's Caitrin Lonergan scored a short-handed goal to tie the game with 29.6 seconds to play, sending the game to overtime, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with eighth-ranked Clarkson in ECAC play on Thursday night at Cheel Arena.
Early in the first, Clarkson's Jenna Goodwin nearly broke away from the Saints' defense and looked to put the Golden Knights on the board first, but St. Lawrence goaltender made the stop, keeping the game tied 0-0.
After one period of play, the Saints held a 10-9 edge in shots on goal.
The Scarlet and Brown opened the second period with a 2-on-1 breakaway with
Suyeon Eom and
Rachel Bjorgan, but Michelle Pasiechnyk was up to the task.
With Anne Cherkowski sent to the box for a five-minute interference major, the Saints looked for the edge, but
Kristen Guerriero was also sent to the box for a high stick, bringing the game back to 4-on-4 and the Golden Knights successfully killed off the five minute penalty.
After the second frame, Clarkson held a 22-15 lead in shots on goal.
Cherkowski got sent to the box for the second time and this time the Saints took advantage, as
Rachel Teslak got the puck to
Brittney Gout from the point, Gout then slipped the pass to Podvey, who buried the puck on the doorstep for the power play goal at 9:38.
Morgan made some critical saves on the penalty kill to keep St. Lawrence in the lead. Â
Aly McLeod looked to make it 2-0 with a back-handed breakaway, but sent the shot just wide at 12:34.
The Golden Knights pulled Pasiechnyk, while on the penalty kill and Lonergan capitalized on a rebound out in front of Morgan to tie the game 1-1 with 29.6 seconds remaining in the third to send the game to overtime.
Both the Saints and Golden Knights had solid opportunities in an overtime thriller, but the game would end in a 1-1 tie.
"A real good effort by both teams tonight and a lot of chances both ways for a 1-1 game for sure," said head coach
Chris Wells. "That's a big tie for us as we continue to improve and play hard each game. Lucy had some beauty saves and we had some good chances to win in overtime."
Morgan finished with 36 saves, while Pasiechnyk made 30 saves for Clarkson.
St. Lawrence moved to 7-7-5 on the season and 3-2-2 in conference play, while Clarkson moved to 14-2-3 and 5-1-1.
The Saints will host the Golden Knights in game two of the ECAC series on Saturday, December 4th at 3 p.m.
