Kaden Pickering scored the shootout winner, as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fought to a 2-2 tie with Union at Messa Rink on Saturday night.
The shootout win gave the Saints an extra point in the ECAC standings. The shootout went four rounds and Pickering backhanded the puck over the goaltender's blocker to take home the second league point.
St. Lawrence went to 2-2-3 on the season and 1-0-1 in the ECAC with the tie, while Union's record went to 2-6-2 and 1-2-1 in conference play.
"It was good to come away with the shootout win after giving up the six-on-five extra attacker goal," said Charles W. Appleton Head Men's Hockey CoachÂ
Brent Brekke "They did a good job of staying above us and blocked alot of shots, especially after Murphy left the game in the third. They protected Nieto well when he took over in net. We had a great possession in overtime but didn't get enough pucks to the net in that situation. Overall, it was a solid weekend as we came home with five points to start ECAC play. We can't wait to be back in Appleton next weekend for our first home games of the season."
It was Union that would end up striking first with a strange goal late in the first. The Dutchmen went on the counterattack following a Saints' turnover, but St. Lawrence did well to get back and defend. Liam Robertson chipped the puck ahead to Chaz Smedsrud, who laid it off to Andrew Seaman. Seaman fired a wrist shot in the slot that was blocked in front by
Mason Waite. The puck deflected up in the air, then off another Saint and past
Emil Zetterquist, who could not locate the bouncing puck.
It took the Skating Saints just 10 seconds into the second frame to tie the contest off a phenomenal goal from Peltonen. Off the opening draw of the period,
Philippe Chapleau chipped a pass ahead to
Max Dorrington, who tapped it over to Peltonen. The junior skated in towards the top of the right circle, then unloaded a powerful wrist shot through the legs of the Dutchmen defender and over the glove of Murphy in net to equalize the game at 1-1. The goal was Peltonen's second tally of the year.
The Scarlet and Brown had two chances on separate power plays to take the lead, but were shut down both times. The first opportunity came with three minutes and 20 seconds left in the second period. The Saints worked the puck around the top of the power play before a shot was ripped on net. The rebound was chipped by
Ashton Fry, starting a scrum, and with the puck still loose, the referees lost sight of it and blew the whistle, ending the bid.
With less than a minute left in the second, Chapleau laid a changeup on the Union net and had the shot tip off a defender. The redirection was dangerous as Murphy went to his stomach to catch the deflection with his toe. The puck then came to
Justin Paul, who was also stopped to keep the game 1-1 going into intermission.
Union lost their starting goaltender Murphy to an injury with 16 minutes to go in the third, and were forced to turn to Garrett Nieto in net.
The Saints welcomed Nieto to the game with a goal 47 seconds into his time in net. Captain
David Jankowski, who had three assists last night, received a pass from Paul and skated patiently into Dutchmen territory. The senior turned and sent a puck back to Makowski at the blue line, who fired a low shot on goal. The shot dodged the traffic in front of Nieto and went in to give the Saints the 2-1 lead.
It looked like Union might've tied up the game with 6:05 left in regulation when Ville Immonen received a centered pass from the Dutchmen's captain, and put a quick shot onto Zetterquist. The puck rang off the pipe and the Union forward went crashing into the net, stopping the play from developing any further for the Dutchmen.
Union pulled Nieto late in the third, and it paid off as the Dutchmen got an equalizer from Gabriel Seger with the extra attacker. Nic Petruolo passed the puck along the top to Brandon Estes, who found Seger on the right circle. The assistant captain found the top shelf with a wrist shot to make it a 2-2 contest with a little over a minute left in regulation.
After the five-minute overtime period went scoreless, the game ended as an official tie, but the teams went to a shootout for an extra league point. The first three rounds yielded no goals as the Dutchmen and the Saints failed to score.
Cameron Buhl,
Chris Pappas, and Jankowski came up empty in said rounds. After a fumbled puck on Union's fourth attempt, Pickering came down the right side and made a move to his backhand. The captain roofed the puck home to give the Scarlet and Brown a second point in the ECAC standings.
Zetterquist finished the game with 23 saves, and turned away all four Union shootout bids. Murphy played well for the Dutchmen stopping 22 shots before his injury in the third. Nieto stopped four of the five shots he faced in relief of Murphy, and stopped three of four shootout attempts from the Saints.
St. Lawrence owned a 32-29 advantage in shots over Union and generated 77 in total.
Both teams went scoreless on the power play, as the Saints went 0-3 and the Dutchmen went 0-4.
