The St. Lawrence University men's hockey team came back in the third period with goals from
Ashton Fry and
Luc Salem to tie the game after going down 2-0, but a late Dartmouth goal pushed the Saints to a 3-2 loss on Friday night at Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence fell to 2-3-3 overall and 1-1-1 in ECAC play. Dartmouth improved to 2-3-0 and 2-2-0 in conference action.
Before the game today, The St. Lawrence University men's hockey team got the chance to finally share the 2021 ECAC Championship with the fans at Appleton Arena. The Skating Saints were joined on the ice by former captains
Dylan Woolf, and
Callum Cusinato along with
Eddie Pavlini, and
Greg Lapointe. The four helped lift the championship banner to the rafters of Appleton Arena in front of 1774 fans to a crowd of cheers.
"That was a frustrating outcome after a good first period," said Charles W. Appleton Head Men's Hockey Coach
Brent Brekke "We were fighting the puck for most of the night and we did not make the plays that were available for us. I thought Dartmouth played hard tonight and capitalized on their chances.Despite the result, it was great to see such a tremendous turnout by our student body and fans tonight. They had Appleton rocking and brought a great energy to the arena!"
The Skating Saints came out firing in their first home game since their 5-4 overtime win over Colgate last season, but could not get one past Justin Ferguson in the Big Green net. The Scarlet and Brown outshot Dartmouth 23-6 in attempts and had a commanding 15-4 edge in shots on goal in the opening frame. However, the game would remain tied at 0-0 going into the second.
The first goal of the game belonged to Dartmouth, as they scored 40 seconds into the second period of play. The Big Green goal started at the blue line with Jack Cameron, who fired a shot off the end boards. The puck came around to the left side of
Emil Zetterquist and was swatted at by Scott Chisholm. Mark Gallant came from behind the net and caught the puck, catching Zetterquist off guard. Gallant would find room on the near post and make it a 1-0 game with the wrist shot.
Six minutes later in the second period, Dartmouth would double their lead. Two Big Green forwards pressured the Saints' defense and forced a turnover in dangerous territory. The puck came to Matt Hubbarde, who slid a pass down to Sam Hesler. Hesler, who was open in front of the net, beat Zetterquist to make it a 2-0 game.
The Saints nearly cut the lead in half in the late stages of the period getting shots to Ferguson, but efforts from
Aleksi Peltonen,
Kaden Pickering, and
Philippe Chapleau went off the post, was saved, and was blocked respectively to keep the score at 2-0 going into the third.
The Skating Saints finally cut the lead in half one minute and eight seconds into the third period. Peltonen carried a puck into the Dartmouth end and put a backhand shot onto the goal, but the bid was stopped by Ferguson and went behind the Big Green goal. Peltonen collected the puck behind the net and attempted to score on the nearby post, but the puck bounced out to Fry. The junior forward buried the puck to get St. Lawrence on the board and make it a 2-1 game.
The first goal gave the Scarlet and Brown some juice and they were able to capitalize with an equalizing goal just 37 seconds later. Captain
David Jankowski started the play on the side boards in the neutral zone making a pass to
Chris Pappas. The first-year forward missed the net with a backhand attempt, but his shot bounced around the net and onto the stick of
Justin Paul. Paul made a turnaround pass to a wide-open Salem in the neutral zone, who ripped a shot past Ferguson to make it a 2-2 game in the blink of an eye.
However, with eight minutes and 41 seconds left in regulation, Dartmouth would regain their lead. Chisholm held the puck in the Saints' defensive zone and sent a pass up to Harrison Markell at the point. Markell worked the puck left to his defensive partner in Cameron. Cameron walked down to the circle and fired a wrist shot through traffic and in to give the Big Green the 3-2 lead.
The Saints played with an extra skater for the final 2:54 as they were afforded a power play opportunity, then ended up pulling Zetterquist after the man advantage was over. St. Lawrence created numerous opportunities, but were unable to find the game-tying goal as the game finished at 3-2.
Zetterquist finished with 18 saves for the Skating Saints, while Ferguson stopped 30 for Dartmouth.
St. Lawrence dominated in the shot totals to the tune of a 60-34 advantage in shot attempts, and 32-21 in shots on goal. Both power play units went cold in the game as the Saints went 0-5 on the man advantage and Dartmouth went 0-4.
The Skating Saints will be back in action tomorrow Saturday, November 13th to take on the No. 10/6 Harvard University Crimson at 7:00 p.m. from Appleton Arena.
