Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Caleigh Burchfield '22

Saints Fall to No. 9 Harvard, 2-0

The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team held control of the puck for the majority of the game, but failed to produce a goal, falling to Harvard 2-0 at Appleton Arena on Friday night in Canton, New York.

After a tripping penalty was called against St. Lawrence with two minutes and 30 seconds left to play in the first, Harvard headed to their second power-play of the game. After some quick passing by the Crimson, Taze Thompson was able to tip one past Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan to put Harvard up 1-0.

At the end of the first, Harvard outshot the Saints 8-6.

Harvard was called for tripping with one minute and 15 seconds left, and St. Lawrence had several good chances on the power-play late in the second, but were unable to find the back of the net.

After a scoreless second, the Saints outshot the Crimson 8-5 in the period.

The Saints poured on the pressure in the final period of play and had some excellent chances to show for it, but Harvard netminder Becky Dutton was a brick wall.

Hillary Sterling carried the puck up the ice and fired it on net from the circle, but Dutton made a stick save to keep Harvard in the lead. Abby Hustler fired the puck back on net off the rebound, but again Harvard's goalkeeper was equal to the task.

Head coach Chris Wells '92 pulled Morgan at the 2:24 mark for the extra attacker and Sterling almost slipped one past Dutton on a wraparound, but was unable to get the puck in the net.

"Harvard is one of the top teams in our league and we played one of our best games of the year," said Wells. "We were just unable to convert on the many chances we had. Harvard did a good job with their sticks deflecting pucks and altering plays in the offensive zone. They scored a beautiful PP goal and that was the difference."

After an intense third, St. Lawrence had outshot Harvard 10-6.

"What a great crowd and energy in Appleton,'' Wells added. "Our team can't thank the people enough for creating a great environment in the rink tonight! We only wish we could have set off the siren and give them a reward for coming. That was a great college hockey game."

Morgan finished with 17 saves on the night while Dutton had 24 for the Crimson.

St. Lawrence went 18-for-45 at the face-off circle, was 0-6 on the power-play, and 3-4 on penalty kill.

St. Lawrence fell to 5-3-2 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play, while Harvard improved to 4-0-1 and 3-0-1.

Prior to tonight's game captains Skylar Podvey and Harvard's Emma Buckles help spread the word on the #CloseTheGapNCAA campaign to add 12 teams to the women's hockey national tournament.

The Saints host Dartmouth tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm at Appleton Arena in Canton, New York.
