Gabi Jones and
Skylar Podvey scored their first goals of the season and three other members of the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team scored to top RIT 5-1 in non-conference action on Tuesday evening in Rochester, New York.
Abby Hustler picked up the rebound off the right side and lifted a high shot over the shoulder of RIT goaltender Taylor Liotta for her fourth goal of the season, putting the Saints on the board first.
Nara Elia and
Rachel Teslak assisted on the play.
Less than two minutes later,
Melissa Jefferies left a drop pass for
Rachel Bjorgan, who fired a shot to put the Scarlet and Brown up 2-0.
Hillary Sterling also earned an assist.
On the power play, RIT's Hana Solinger put the Tigers back within one with a shot from the slot, between the legs of Saints' goaltender
Caitlin Whitehead at 17:14..
After one period of play, St. Lawrence held a 13-9 edge in shots.
With 10:17 remaining in the second period,
Jaimie Rainville relieved
Caitlin Whitehead in goal for the Saints. St. Lawrence maintained its one goal lead after two periods of play.
One minute and 48 seconds into the third frame,
Hillary Sterling netted her second of the season, with an unassisted wrist shot, making it 3-1 St. Lawrence.
Gabi Jones tallied her first point of the season with an empty netter, increasing the Saints' lead to 4-1 with 1:35 remaining. Hustler and Jefferies assisted on the play.
Graduate student
Skylar Podvey also tallied her first point of the season, as she banged in a shot from
Suyeon Eom to seal the win with 13.5 seconds left on the clock.
Kristen Guerriero added an assist on the Saints final goal.
"Thanksgiving week games are always interesting," said head coach
Chris Wells '92. "I felt we had a good first, RIT outworked us in the second and then we responded with a good third. Whitehead and Rainville both made some nice saves and we were able to pull out the win. A couple players were able to find the back of the net tonight, which was a nice reward for their hard work."
Whitehead finished with 11 saves, while Rainville made 10. Liotta made 25 saves for the Tigers.
The Saints finished with a 32-22 advantage in shots, while RIT went 1-for-3 on the power play.
With the win, the Scarlet and Brown improved to 7-5-4 on the season, while RIT fell to 0-17-0.
The Saints will continue their Thanksgiving Break trip to Washington D.C., where they'll face two Big-10 opponents in Ohio State and the University of Minnesota Duluth at the D1 in DC Tournament on November 26 and 27, respectively.
